Official: Auxerre have signed Southampton striker Cameron Archer.

Auxerre have officially completed the signing of Southampton striker Cameron Archer on loan, with the Ligue 1 club confirming the Deadline Day agreement involving the 24-year-old forward.

The French side announced the transfer after successfully reaching an agreement with Southampton, bringing Archer to France for the remainder of the campaign. The move gives the former England Under-21 international an opportunity to revive his fortunes after finding regular first-team football difficult to secure at St Mary’s.

Archer will also be reunited with a familiar face in France. The striker previously worked under Will Still during the Belgian manager’s time with Southampton, and the pair will now link up again with Still currently in charge of Auxerre.

The reunion could prove particularly important for Archer as he looks to rediscover his confidence and establish himself as an important attacking player in Ligue 1.

Archer Completes Medical Before Transfer

Archer completed his medical on Tuesday before the move was formally confirmed, allowing Auxerre to finalise the transfer before the closure of the summer window.

The deal came together after Auxerre initially explored another option for their attack.

The club had been in negotiations with Torino over a possible move for Zakaria Aboukhlal. However, discussions between the two clubs eventually broke down because an agreement could not be reached.

With their pursuit of Aboukhlal ending without success, Auxerre quickly turned their attention elsewhere and moved for Archer.

The Southampton forward subsequently underwent the required medical examinations before putting pen to paper on his temporary move to France.

Auxerre were particularly keen to add another attacking option because of their need for greater firepower following the departure of Lassine Sinayoko.

Sinayoko recently left the club to join Ligue 1 rivals Paris FC, leaving Auxerre with a significant gap to fill in their forward line.

Archer’s arrival now gives Still another option in attack.

Archer’s Southampton Record

Archer joined Southampton from Aston Villa two years ago and has since made 77 appearances for the Saints across competitions.

During that period, he has scored 11 goals.

Although those numbers demonstrate that Archer has contributed in front of goal, he has struggled to establish himself as an undisputed regular during his Southampton career.

His move to Auxerre therefore represents a chance to secure consistent playing opportunities and potentially rediscover the form that made him such an exciting prospect earlier in his career.

The 24-year-old previously developed through Aston Villa’s system and earned recognition at international youth level with England.

His experience in English football, combined with his pace and ability to operate around the attacking areas, could make him an interesting addition to Auxerre’s squad.

However, Archer’s Southampton spell has not developed exactly as many supporters might have hoped when he arrived from Villa.
