Overcome with emotion, Mikaela Shiffrin praises her U.S. teammates who earned bronze over her in the women’s team combined event at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Mikaela Shiffrin was full of emotion after Team USA secured a bronze medal in the women’s team combined event at the 2026 Winter Olympics, even though she narrowly missed out on the podium herself.
The historic event, staged for the first time at the Milano Cortina Games, delivered dramatic scenes as American pair Shiffrin and Breezy Johnson entered the competition among the favourites for gold after winning the world title together the previous season.
Johnson produced a superb downhill performance and clocked the fastest time in her section of the race, putting the American duo in a strong position heading into the slalom leg. However, Shiffrin was unable to match the pace of the quickest slalom skiers and eventually finished just over a second behind the leading time in her discipline.
That result ultimately left Shiffrin and Johnson agonisingly outside the medals in fourth place, missing bronze by a mere 0.06 seconds. Instead, fellow Americans Jacqueline Wiles and Paula Moltzan claimed third place for Team USA.
The gold medal went to Austria’s pairing of Ariane Raedler and Katharina Huber after a thrilling contest, while Germany secured silver through Emma Aicher and Kira Weidle-Winkelmann.
Although disappointed not to add another Olympic medal to her collection, Shiffrin’s reaction after the event showed how proud she was of her teammates. Speaking emotionally in a video shared on Instagram, the American skiing icon praised the commitment and sacrifice shown by her fellow competitors.
Shiffrin explained that Johnson had said something after the race which deeply moved her. She reflected on how the bronze medal represented years of dedication and sacrifice, not just one race or one Olympic moment.
According to Shiffrin, the medal was deserved because of everything Wiles and Moltzan had put into their careers over many years of hard work and perseverance. She stressed that their achievement was built through commitment, resilience, and passion for the sport.
The three-time Olympic gold medalist also expressed sympathy for Johnson, believing her teammate deserved recognition for the exceptional downhill run she produced earlier in the day. Despite missing the podium themselves, Shiffrin admitted she could not have imagined a more meaningful outcome for her teammates.
She specifically highlighted how special it was to see Moltzan begin her Olympic campaign with a medal and praised Wiles for overcoming adversity to return to the world stage and deliver such a memorable performance.
The result denied Shiffrin what would have been her first Olympic medal since the 2018 Winter Games in PyeongChang. Still, rather than focus on personal disappointment, she chose to celebrate the success of her teammates and the collective spirit within the American squad.
Shiffrin described the experience of embracing her fellow skiers at the finish line as one of the greatest moments she has ever had at an Olympic Games. Even with multiple Olympic titles and years of success behind her, she admitted this occasion felt unique because she had never experienced celebrating another athlete’s medal in quite the same way.
The skiing superstar explained that seeing her teammates succeed after years of unseen effort and preparation was deeply inspiring. She repeatedly thanked everyone involved for helping make the achievement possible and said the bronze medal winners had earned their place in Olympic history.
For Shiffrin, the moment also reflected the emotional journey she has been through over the past several years. After enduring disappointment at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, where she failed to finish several races despite entering as a favourite, returning to the Olympic stage in Cortina carried extra significance.
Earlier in the Games, Shiffrin had already secured gold in the slalom event, becoming the oldest American woman ever to win Olympic alpine skiing gold. That victory added another remarkable chapter to her legendary career and reinforced her status as one of the greatest alpine skiers in history.
At the same time, Shiffrin also remains the youngest American alpine skier to win Olympic gold, having first achieved the feat at just 18 years old during the 2014 Winter Olympics.
The women’s team combined event itself provided one of the most dramatic alpine skiing contests of the Games. Austria edged Germany by only five-hundredths of a second in a thrilling finish that kept spectators on edge until the very end.
Germany’s Aicher delivered the fastest slalom run of the day to propel her nation into silver-medal position, while the American battle for bronze went right down to the final timings.
Wiles and Moltzan eventually edged out Shiffrin and Johnson in heartbreaking fashion for the latter pair, but the razor-thin margin did little to diminish the camaraderie shared within Team USA.
Throughout her post-race comments, Shiffrin repeatedly returned to the idea of inspiration and teamwork. Rather than allowing frustration to dominate her emotions, she focused on recognising the achievements of those around her and appreciating the significance of the moment for American skiing.
Her heartfelt words quickly resonated with fans online, many praising her sportsmanship and emotional honesty in defeat. Social media users highlighted how graciously she handled the situation despite narrowly missing out on another Olympic podium finish.
The scenes also underlined the close bond shared among members of the U.S. alpine skiing team. Even amid the pressure and intensity of Olympic competition, the athletes showed genuine support for one another.
For Wiles and Moltzan, the bronze medal represented a career-defining achievement and a reward for years of dedication to the sport. For Johnson, despite the disappointment of missing out, her downhill performance confirmed her status among the world’s elite racers.
And for Shiffrin, the event added yet another memorable chapter to an already extraordinary Olympic journey — not because of a medal, but because of the emotion, unity, and pride she felt watching her teammates succeed on one of sport’s biggest stages.
