Philippe Clement linked to worrying Norwich City claim.
Norwich City are facing growing concerns over their difficult start to the season, with a new report claiming some players and staff have become mentally fatigued by the demanding methods of head coach Philippe Clement.
The Belgian took charge of the Canaries in November last year, arriving at Carrow Road during a turbulent period. Norwich were battling near the bottom of the Championship, while supporters were increasingly unhappy with the club’s hierarchy.
Clement eventually changed the atmosphere and performances. During the final months of the previous campaign, only Southampton collected more points than Norwich, creating optimism that the Canaries could challenge for promotion this season.
Norwich expected to challenge this season
That impressive finish meant expectations were high heading into the current campaign. Norwich strengthened their squad with several significant summer additions, while Clement had earned considerable goodwill because of the improvement he produced after taking over.
Instead, the expected promotion challenge has failed to materialise.
After 11 matches, Norwich have lost eight times and sit only one point and one position above the relegation places. Such a record is a major disappointment for a club that would have expected to be competing around the play-off positions at the very least.
Clement has also had to cope with a growing injury list. Captain Kenny McLean and leading scorer Mo Toure are among the players currently unavailable, making an already difficult situation more challenging.
However, injuries cannot completely explain Norwich’s poor results. The club’s current position represents a significant underachievement considering the expectations surrounding the team before the season began.
Concerns emerge over Clement’s methods
Against that background, an uncomfortable report has now emerged about the atmosphere around Carrow Road.
The Daily Mail claims that some Norwich players and members of staff are believed to be mentally fatigued because of Clement’s relentless approach. The report suggests that the manager works continuously and maintains extremely high demands, something that has been part of his management style throughout his career.
However, it appears that not everyone within the club is comfortable with the intensity.
One source close to the dressing room reportedly claimed that some individuals are struggling to find time even for ordinary personal activities, while an increase in colds has allegedly been noticed because people are becoming run down.
Clement’s demanding approach under scrutiny
Clement is understood to be heavily involved in the club’s operations and is not afraid to express strong opinions. His meetings with people at Norwich have reportedly lasted as long as seven hours, demonstrating the level of detail and commitment he brings to his work.
That dedication may have helped produce the remarkable improvement Norwich experienced last season, but the latest reports raise questions over whether the same approach is currently having an adverse effect.
A demanding manager can generate strong standards and commitment when results are positive. When defeats continue to arrive, however, an intense working environment can become much harder for players and staff to handle.
Clement’s position is not currently under threat
Despite Norwich’s poor results, there is reportedly no immediate indication that Clement is facing dismissal.
The former Rangers manager still has significant credit with the club because of the excellent work he produced after arriving last season. His ability to transform Norwich’s fortunes has clearly earned him patience from those in charge.
Nevertheless, Clement will understand that football managers are ultimately judged on results.
Eight defeats from 11 league matches is a sequence that cannot continue indefinitely, particularly at a club that started the campaign believing promotion was realistic. The manager will therefore know that Norwich need to begin collecting victories soon.
Results are the real solution
The latest claims may concern supporters, but there is ultimately one straightforward way for Clement to improve the mood around Carrow Road: Norwich need to start winning football matches consistently.
The Belgian has already demonstrated that he can gain the confidence and commitment of his players. The turnaround during the latter stages of last season proved that his methods can work when the team is performing well.
If Norwich can rediscover that form, the current concerns could quickly fade. A series of positive results would lift the players, supporters and staff while restoring belief that a top-eight finish remains possible.
Clement will also take encouragement from what happened last season. Norwich were transformed under his leadership, and there is no reason for him to believe that a similar recovery is impossible.
However, time is becoming increasingly important. Norwich cannot afford to allow their poor run to continue for much longer if they genuinely want to challenge for promotion.
The manager may need to slightly adapt his approach, but ultimately his biggest priority is clear. Norwich must build momentum, regain confidence and turn their performances into victories before the pressure surrounding Carrow Road becomes even greater.
