Police officer taken to hospital after alleged assault before Celtic v Hearts match.
A police officer was taken to hospital after allegedly being assaulted following the Scottish Premiership clash between Celtic and Hearts at the weekend.
The reported incident happened on Springfield Road in Glasgow shortly after the full-time whistle at Celtic Park, where Celtic recorded a commanding 7-1 victory over Hearts.
The result ensured Martin O’Neill’s Celtic side remained at the top of the Scottish Premiership standings, while Hearts suffered a heavy defeat in a match that had attracted a large crowd to Parkhead.
Police Scotland has confirmed that a 23-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the alleged assault involving the police officer.
The officer was taken to hospital following the incident and received medical treatment. Police have since confirmed that the officer was released from hospital.
The 23-year-old who was arrested is expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday, October 19, 2026, in relation to the alleged incident.
The circumstances surrounding the disturbance remain under investigation, with detectives continuing to establish exactly what happened in the aftermath of the Celtic and Hearts fixture.
The incident occurred after an already busy afternoon around Celtic Park, where supporters had gathered before, during and after the match.
Celtic’s emphatic victory on the pitch provided plenty for supporters to celebrate, with the home side scoring seven times against their Scottish Premiership opponents.
However, attention has also turned towards incidents away from the pitch after Police Scotland confirmed that officers were dealing with more than one alleged assault connected to the match.
Detectives are separately investigating a reported assault involving a 22-year-old man at Celtic Way before kick-off.
According to police, that incident took place between 2.45pm and 2.55pm on Sunday, October 18, in the Celtic Way area at London Road.
No arrests have been made in connection with that second investigation at this stage.
Police Scotland has stressed that enquiries into the alleged assault remain ongoing as officers attempt to identify those involved and establish the full circumstances of the incident.
Footage circulating online has also appeared to show a disturbance involving a large group of people in the area before the match.
The videos reportedly show several individuals, many of whom appear to be wearing dark clothing, involved in a confrontation.
People can be seen appearing to exchange punches, while objects described as bottles also appear to have been thrown during the disturbance.
The footage has attracted attention online, although police have not confirmed that every person visible in the videos was involved in criminal activity.
Officers are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the reported incident and have not announced any arrests relating to the alleged assault on the 22-year-old man.
The separate investigation comes as Police Scotland continues to examine events connected with the Celtic and Hearts fixture.
The alleged assault involving the police officer took place after the match, while the incident involving the 22-year-old man was reported before kick-off.
The force has provided confirmation of the arrest and charge in relation to the police officer but has said enquiries remain active regarding the earlier incident.
A Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed that a 23-year-old man had been arrested and charged following a disturbance on Springfield Road after the Celtic and Hearts match on Sunday, October 18.
The spokesperson said the officer involved had been taken to hospital after the alleged assault and was later released following treatment.
The arrested man is due to appear before Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday, October 19.
Police Scotland also confirmed that detectives were investigating a separate report concerning an alleged assault on a 22-year-old man.
That incident reportedly happened in Celtic Way, London Road, during a short period between 2.45pm and 2.55pm.
The force has not indicated whether the two incidents are connected, and investigations into the circumstances remain ongoing.
The developments have added an unwanted off-field dimension to what was otherwise a remarkable afternoon for Celtic on the pitch.
Celtic produced one of their most emphatic league performances of the season, scoring seven goals against Hearts and maintaining their position at the summit of the Scottish Premiership.
Despite the comfortable result, the reported incidents surrounding the fixture are now being examined by police.
The arrest of the 23-year-old means that at least one person has been formally charged in connection with an alleged assault on a police officer.
However, the investigation into the reported pre-match disturbance remains at an earlier stage, with detectives continuing to make enquiries and no arrests confirmed in relation to the assault on the 22-year-old.
Police Scotland’s statement also confirms that the injured officer has now been discharged from hospital following treatment, providing an update on their condition.
The force has not provided further details about the nature or extent of the officer’s injuries.
Similarly, details regarding the condition of the 22-year-old man involved in the separate reported assault have not been provided.
The incidents are likely to remain a focus for investigators as they work to establish what happened around Celtic Park before and after Sunday’s fixture.
Supporters attending football matches are routinely encouraged to behave responsibly, and incidents involving violence can lead to police investigations and criminal charges.
With footage of the reported disturbance circulating online, detectives may also be examining available video evidence as part of their enquiries.
At present, however, police have only confirmed the arrest and charge of the 23-year-old man in connection with the alleged assault on the police officer.
The second investigation remains ongoing, and police have yet to confirm any arrests.
The Celtic-Hearts match itself ended with a comprehensive victory for the Glasgow side, who scored seven goals against their opponents.
But the incidents reported around the stadium have shifted some of the attention away from the football and towards public order and safety.
Police Scotland is continuing to investigate both matters, while the man charged in connection with the alleged assault on the officer is due before Glasgow Sheriff Court.
Further developments are expected as detectives continue their enquiries into the reported incidents before and after the match.
