Rangers poised for SPFL boost following victory at Celtic Park
Rangers are poised to benefit financially from a record distribution announced by the Scottish Professional Football League, while manager Derek McInnes has revealed that legendary former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson praised the club’s impressive 1-0 victory over Celtic at Parkhead.
The Rangers squad has also returned from the latest international break, with several players producing encouraging performances for their countries while others endured more difficult spells away from Ibrox.
The club now turns its attention towards domestic action, with Rangers preparing to welcome Kilmarnock on Saturday afternoon as they look to build on their important Old Firm success.
Rangers set for record SPFL payment
Rangers are among the clubs in line to benefit from record financial distributions announced by the SPFL.
The league has confirmed that £49.6 million will be paid to its member clubs, representing an increase of 18 per cent.
The money includes prize payments and facility fees, with the distribution being shared between clubs through the SPFL’s established ladder system.
The increased payments provide Rangers with another financial boost as they attempt to strengthen their position both domestically and in European competition.
The timing will be welcomed by the Ibrox hierarchy, particularly as Rangers continue to build a squad capable of challenging Celtic for major honours.
Ferguson praises Rangers’ Parkhead victory
Derek McInnes has revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson contacted him following Rangers’ 1-0 triumph over Celtic at Parkhead.
The victory represented a significant response from Rangers after Celtic had previously defeated them 3-0 at Ibrox in the League Cup.
McInnes said Ferguson encouraged him to concentrate on how Rangers finish the season rather than becoming overly focused on what has already happened.
The Rangers manager was also pleased that the legendary Scot recognised the quality of his side’s performance in securing three points away to their biggest rivals.
The result could prove important in the title race, especially with Rangers now having an opportunity to move to the top of the Premiership with victory over Kilmarnock.
Bouanani loan comes at a significant cost
Rangers are reportedly covering the entirety of Badredine Bouanani’s wages during his loan spell at Ibrox.
The cost is understood to be as high as £1.8 million per year, highlighting the club’s financial commitment to the attacking player.
Rangers could also face a substantial transfer fee if they decide to make the move permanent.
A permanent deal has reportedly been valued at approximately £15.5 million, meaning the club would have to make a major financial decision if Bouanani impresses sufficiently to earn a permanent move.
Concerns over Saturday scheduling
Former Rangers midfielder Derek Ferguson has criticised what he described as the “brutal” scheduling of Premiership matches.
The latest concerns have centred on Rangers’ trip to St Mirren after the fixture was moved to an 8pm Saturday kick-off.
The change has once again raised concerns over travelling supporters, particularly those who face lengthy journeys after evening matches.
The issue has become an increasingly familiar source of frustration among supporters, with questions continuing to be raised about whether the needs of travelling fans are receiving sufficient consideration when fixtures are arranged.
Rangers internationals return with mixed results
Rangers’ players have now returned from international duty, with several individuals providing reasons for optimism.
Minsu Kim, Findlay Curtis and Olwethu Makhanya were among those who reportedly impressed during the break.
Makhanya, in particular, continues to attract attention following his promising start to life at Ibrox.
South African reports have suggested that his performances could eventually lead to interest from an even bigger club, especially after he received a player of the month award.
However, not every Rangers player enjoyed an equally positive international period.
Nicolas Raskin and several other members of the squad experienced mixed fortunes during the break, although the majority returned to Glasgow fit and available.
McInnes confirmed that all 13 Rangers internationals came back without major injury problems.
Devlin ruled out for around six weeks
One notable exception is Cammy Devlin, who suffered a hamstring injury while away with his country.
The midfielder is expected to be sidelined for at least six weeks, creating a significant absence for McInnes.
Devlin’s importance may have been underestimated by some supporters, but his defensive statistics underline the contribution he has made.
His interceptions, ball recoveries and success in individual duels have provided Rangers with valuable defensive protection in midfield.
His absence could therefore have a greater impact than his raw attacking numbers suggest.
Ghedjemis ends Rangers transfer hopes
Rangers have also suffered a setback in their pursuit of Frosinone attacker Farès Ghedjemis.
The player has committed his future to the Italian club by signing a new contract that reportedly runs until 2030.
Rangers had previously shown interest and made offers during the summer, but those efforts have now ended with Ghedjemis agreeing fresh terms.
The player had reportedly been valued at around £18 million, making any potential transfer a substantial investment.
Away fans remain a major issue
SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster has confirmed that Rangers and Celtic agreed there would be no away supporters at their league meetings this season.
The decision follows previous concerns surrounding disorder at Old Firm fixtures.
However, Doncaster has indicated that the league wants travelling supporters to return as soon as circumstances allow.
The absence of away fans has changed the atmosphere surrounding the biggest matches in Scottish football, while discussions continue over how the restrictions can eventually be removed.
Rangers target top spot against Kilmarnock
Rangers now have an immediate opportunity to make the most of their Parkhead victory.
McInnes’ side host Kilmarnock at 3pm on Saturday, knowing a victory would take them to the top of the Premiership.
There will be no live UK television stream because of the traditional Saturday afternoon broadcasting blackout.
After their successful trip to Celtic Park and a positive return from international duty for most of the squad, Rangers will hope to maintain their momentum.
With record SPFL payments providing an additional financial boost, several young players making an impression and Ferguson offering encouragement, Rangers have plenty of reasons for optimism.
The challenge now is to turn the Parkhead victory into sustained form and ensure they remain firmly in contention at the top of the Scottish Premiership.
