Rooney told to ‘own’ Birmingham City’s ‘regret’ following a fresh allegation.
Rooney Reflects on Difficult Birmingham City Spell
Birmingham City’s journey over the past decade and a half has been filled with challenges, setbacks, and moments of uncertainty. Since their relegation from the Premier League in 2011, the club has endured managerial changes, financial concerns, points deductions, and infrastructure issues that have tested supporters’ patience.
A sense of optimism finally arrived when businessman Tom Wagner and the Knighthead ownership group completed their takeover of the club. The new regime promised a bright future, with ambitious plans that included significant investment and the proposal of a new 62,000-capacity stadium. Alongside Wagner, high-profile investors such as NFL legend Tom Brady helped generate excitement among supporters eager to see Birmingham City return to prominence.
However, one of the earliest and most controversial decisions made by the new ownership nearly damaged that goodwill. In October 2023, Birmingham dismissed manager John Eustace despite the team performing strongly in the Championship and sitting in the play-off places. His replacement was former England captain Wayne Rooney, a move that immediately divided opinion among supporters.
A Decision That Changed Birmingham’s Season
The appointment of Rooney ultimately proved disastrous. Birmingham’s form declined dramatically after his arrival, and the club struggled to maintain the momentum built under Eustace.
Rooney remained in charge for fewer than three months before being dismissed. During his brief tenure, Birmingham won only two of their 15 Championship matches. The decline continued even after his departure, with a succession of managers unable to stabilize results.
The campaign ended in heartbreak for Birmingham supporters as the club suffered relegation to League One for the first time in three decades. What had started as a season filled with promotion hopes turned into one of the most disappointing chapters in the club’s recent history.
Although Birmingham quickly responded by earning promotion back to the Championship under Chris Davies, memories of Rooney’s spell continue to generate discussion among fans and pundits alike.
Rooney Admits Birmingham Was His Biggest Regret
Since leaving management, Rooney has become a familiar face on television. The former Manchester United striker regularly appears on Match of the Day and BBC coverage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In recent months, Rooney has been increasingly open about reflecting on his managerial career, particularly his time at Birmingham City.
A widely discussed moment came in an Amazon Prime documentary following Knighthead’s ownership journey, where Tom Brady questioned Rooney’s commitment and approach. The clip quickly attracted attention online and reignited conversations about his time at St Andrew’s.
During a recent BBC Sport question-and-answer session, Rooney admitted that accepting the Birmingham job represented his biggest regret as a manager.
He explained that every coach has decisions they wish they could revisit and acknowledged that the timing of his appointment at Birmingham was the mistake he regretted most. Rooney specifically pointed to taking over from John Eustace as the decision he would most like to change.
When discussing the possibility of returning to management, Rooney was equally candid. He suggested that, at present, he does not see himself stepping back into a coaching role. While he stopped short of ruling it out entirely, he admitted that his current mindset does not make a managerial return appealing.
Birmingham Fan Pundit Delivers Harsh Verdict
Rooney’s comments prompted a strong reaction from Birmingham City fan pundit Jason Moore, who offered a blunt assessment of the entire episode.
Moore described the situation as a complete disaster and argued that everyone involved shared responsibility. In his view, Knighthead should never have dismissed John Eustace, while Rooney should have recognized that the opportunity was not the right fit.
According to Moore, Rooney was not adequately prepared for the challenge he inherited. He believes the ownership made a serious error in replacing a manager who had the team performing above expectations.
While acknowledging Rooney’s expression of regret, Moore argued that the former striker should go a step further and openly accept responsibility for his shortcomings during that period.
Questions Over Rooney’s Coaching Ability
Moore suggested that Rooney’s biggest issue was not simply accepting the job but failing to adapt his tactical approach to the squad available.
He pointed out that Eustace had achieved success by understanding the limitations of Birmingham’s players and setting the team up accordingly. Rooney, in contrast, attempted to introduce a different style of football that did not suit the squad.
Moore argued that stronger leadership was required and claimed Rooney should have been more willing to challenge expectations from above if they conflicted with what was best for the team.
In his opinion, several of Rooney’s decisions during his Birmingham tenure were difficult to understand and contributed significantly to the club’s decline.
The supporter also questioned Rooney’s overall coaching credentials, suggesting that not every elite player automatically becomes a successful manager.
Great Players Do Not Always Become Great Managers
To support his argument, Moore referenced several famous football figures whose coaching careers failed to match their achievements on the pitch.
He highlighted Patrick Vieira, noting that despite a distinguished playing career, managerial success has been relatively limited. Moore also mentioned Fabio Cannavaro, a Ballon d’Or winner whose coaching achievements have not reached the same heights as his playing accomplishments.
According to Moore, Rooney belongs in a similar category. He emphasized that there is no shame in admitting that coaching may not be an individual’s strongest skill, even if they enjoyed tremendous success as a player.
Moore also questioned Rooney’s previous managerial record, including his time with D.C. United. He argued that Rooney’s most positive spell came at Derby County, where he benefited from working alongside Liam Rosenior and managing under circumstances where relegation was already widely expected.
Time for Everyone to Move Forward
Despite the criticism, Moore believes the healthiest outcome for all parties is simply to move on.
He suggested that Rooney should openly acknowledge mistakes made during his Birmingham tenure, while Knighthead should continue accepting responsibility for the decision to appoint him.
For Birmingham City, the focus is now firmly on the future rather than revisiting a painful chapter from the past.
Chris Davies has overseen significant progress since taking charge, although not every supporter has been convinced throughout his tenure. There have been moments when criticism intensified and questions emerged regarding his long-term suitability.
Nevertheless, the club hierarchy has continued to support Davies, providing him with resources and backing to reshape the squad according to his vision.
Birmingham Looking Ahead With Optimism
After securing a 10th-place Championship finish last season—the club’s highest league position for a decade—there is renewed belief that Birmingham can continue climbing the table.
The expanded play-off system for the 2026/27 campaign presents another opportunity for the Blues to challenge for promotion and potentially return to the Premier League.
Meanwhile, John Eustace has continued to strengthen his reputation. Following Birmingham’s relegation, he successfully kept Blackburn Rovers in the Championship and has since impressed at Derby County, another club previously managed by Rooney.
His achievements have only intensified debate over Birmingham’s decision to replace him in the first place.
While Rooney’s latest comments have reopened old discussions, Birmingham supporters will hope the club’s future is defined by progress under Davies rather than memories of a difficult 15-match spell that changed the course of an entire season.
