Scott Cochran adds another Alabama legend, ex-NFL standout to his West Alabama staff

In a strategic move that underscores his commitment to excellence, Scott Cochran, the newly appointed head coach of the University of West Alabama (UWA) football team, has assembled a formidable coaching staff enriched with former University of Alabama legends and NFL standouts. Scott Cochran’s journey to UWA is marked by a distinguished career in collegiate football. Beginning at Louisiana State University (LSU) as a strength and conditioning coach, Cochran laid the foundation for his coaching philosophy, contributing significantly to the program’s success. His subsequent tenure at the University of Alabama solidified his reputation, where he played a pivotal role in the development of the Crimson Tide’s football program, contributing to multiple national championships and SEC titles. Cochran’s expertise further extended to the University of Georgia, where he served as a special teams coach, helping the Bulldogs achieve significant success on the field.

Throughout his career, Cochran has been instrumental in developing over 50 athletes who became first-round draft picks and more than 200 athletes who were drafted into the NFL. His involvement in teams that secured eight national championships showcases his ability to contribute to winning programs at the highest level.

Thomas Fletcher: From Player to Coach

Among Cochran’s notable hires is Thomas Fletcher, a former long snapper for the Alabama Crimson Tide from 2017 to 2020. Fletcher’s collegiate career was distinguished by his exceptional work ethic and leadership qualities, serving on the team’s leadership committee. His performance earned him the Patrick Mannelly Award, presented annually to the nation’s best college long snapper. In the 2021 NFL Draft, Fletcher was selected in the sixth round by the Carolina Panthers.

At UWA, Fletcher assumes the roles of special teams coordinator and tight ends coach. Cochran expressed immense confidence in Fletcher’s coaching abilities, stating, “Watching Thomas grow as a coach, I can’t wait to see him run his own room and take over special teams. O.J. Howard: A Champion’s Influence

Another significant addition to the UWA coaching staff is O.J. Howard, a former Alabama tight end and Super Bowl champion. Howard’s collegiate career at Alabama from 2013 to 2016 was marked by his contributions to the team’s success, culminating in earning MVP honors in the 2015 National Championship game. His professional career includes being a first-round NFL Draft selection by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and playing a vital role in their 2020 Super Bowl victory.

At UWA, Howard serves as the Director of Player Development. Cochran highlighted Howard’s leadership and experience, stating, “O.J. was an outstanding athlete at Alabama, earning a first-round NFL Draft selection, but what truly set him apart was his leadership. He is a leader of men, and that’s exactly why he’s the perfect fit for this role.”

Reggie Ragland: Leadership On and Off the Field

Reggie Ragland, a former Alabama linebacker and NFL veteran, joins the UWA staff as the Director of Player Personnel. Ragland’s illustrious career includes being a second-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft and winning a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Cochran expressed enthusiasm about Ragland’s appointment, stating, “Reggie Ragland is a proven leader with a championship mentality, and we couldn’t be more excited to have him join the UWA family as our director of player personnel. As a Super Bowl champion and former SEC Defensive Player of the Year, he knows exactly what it takes to compete and win at the highest levels.”

Damion Square: Anchoring the Defensive Line

Damion Square, another former Alabama standout and NFL veteran, has been appointed as UWA’s defensive line coach. Square’s collegiate career at Alabama was distinguished by three national championships, and his professional tenure spanned nine seasons in the NFL, including a notable six-year period with the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers.

Square’s extensive experience and success at both collegiate and professional levels are expected to significantly bolster UWA’s defensive strategies, providing invaluable mentorship to the Tigers’ defensive linemen.

Blake Sims and Bo Scarbrough: Offensive Powerhouses
