Sheffield Wednesday prepared to compete with Plymouth and MK Dons for QPR player transfer.
Sheffield Wednesday are preparing for another significant rebuild as they get ready for life back in League One, with another busy transfer window expected at Hillsborough. The latest reports suggest the Owls are set to battle fellow League One clubs Plymouth Argyle and MK Dons for the signature of Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper Murphy Cooper.
After enduring an incredibly turbulent period on and off the pitch, Sheffield Wednesday are now looking toward a brighter future under new ownership. While much of the past year was dominated by uncertainty surrounding the club’s financial position, there is now renewed optimism as preparations continue for the upcoming campaign. Strengthening the squad remains a major priority, and signing a new first-choice goalkeeper has emerged as one of the club’s immediate objectives.
A Fresh Start Following Financial Turmoil
The previous campaign was one of the most difficult in Sheffield Wednesday’s modern history. After entering administration, the club’s focus shifted from competing on the pitch to simply ensuring its long-term survival.
Their financial problems ultimately resulted in relegation after beginning the season on zero points because of sanctions. Although the team managed to finish the campaign with a memorable final-day victory over West Bromwich Albion at Hillsborough, the result made little difference to their league position as relegation had already become unavoidable.
Despite those setbacks, the atmosphere surrounding the club has changed dramatically following a successful takeover. Sheffield Wednesday has been acquired by Arise Capital Partners LLC, with David Storch becoming the club’s new chairman. The change in ownership has restored hope among supporters and provided a stronger platform for rebuilding ahead of the new season.
Equally significant is the fact that Wednesday have avoided receiving any additional points deductions for their upcoming League One campaign. That development has allowed everyone connected with the club to concentrate fully on football matters instead of continuing financial uncertainty.
Henrik Pedersen Faces a Major Rebuilding Job
New manager Henrik Pedersen has inherited a squad requiring extensive work before the season begins. Building a competitive team capable of challenging for promotion back to the Championship represents one of his biggest tasks since arriving at Hillsborough.
Creating cohesion within a group that has undergone considerable change will not be straightforward. However, the club’s activity in the transfer market suggests the rebuilding process is already progressing positively.
Wednesday have moved quickly to strengthen several positions and remain determined to add further quality before the transfer window closes. Among their priorities is recruiting a reliable goalkeeper capable of establishing himself as the club’s new first-choice option.
Murphy Cooper Identified as Goalkeeping Target
According to reports from Alan Nixon, Sheffield Wednesday have entered the race to sign Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper Murphy Cooper.
The report states that QPR have granted permission for Cooper to hold discussions with interested clubs, opening the door for negotiations regarding a permanent transfer. Sheffield Wednesday are believed to be one of three League One sides hoping to secure his signature.
Plymouth Argyle and MK Dons are also competing for the goalkeeper, creating a three-way battle for one of the most highly regarded young shot-stoppers currently available in the division.
Why Wednesday Need a New Number One
The search for a goalkeeper has become increasingly urgent because Sheffield Wednesday are expected to lose current goalkeeper Pierce Charles.
Reports have suggested Charles is likely to complete a return to Manchester City, leaving a significant vacancy between the posts. Should that move be finalised, Wednesday will require an experienced replacement capable of becoming the club’s undisputed number one throughout the League One campaign.
Murphy Cooper has therefore emerged as an attractive option, particularly because he is already familiar with both the club and its surroundings following his previous spell at Hillsborough.
Competition from Plymouth and MK Dons
Although Sheffield Wednesday are keen to bring Cooper back, completing a deal will not be straightforward.
Plymouth Argyle have also expressed strong interest in signing the goalkeeper as they continue assessing their options for the new season. However, reports indicate that Plymouth are simultaneously exploring alternative targets, having recently been linked with goalkeeper Nathan Baxter.
MK Dons represent another serious challenger for Cooper’s signature. According to the same reports, the Milton Keynes club may possess greater financial resources than both Wednesday and Plymouth, potentially placing them in a stronger position if negotiations develop into a bidding contest.
That financial advantage could make securing Cooper increasingly difficult for Sheffield Wednesday unless they move quickly to convince both the player and QPR that Hillsborough is the best destination.
Cooper Already Knows Hillsborough
Murphy Cooper is no stranger to Sheffield Wednesday supporters.
The 24-year-old has gained valuable experience through several loan spells during his career. Earlier temporary moves took him to Swindon Town and Stevenage before another opportunity arrived last summer with Barnsley.
His spell at Oakwell proved relatively short-lived, ending midway through the season. Following the conclusion of that loan, Cooper remained in South Yorkshire by joining Sheffield Wednesday for the second half of the Championship campaign.
That previous experience could prove valuable if he returns permanently, as he already understands the expectations at Hillsborough, is familiar with the club’s environment and would require minimal time to settle into the dressing room.
Major Changes to Wednesday’s Squad
Goalkeeper is far from the only area requiring attention this summer.
Sheffield Wednesday have already witnessed several senior players depart following the expiration of their contracts. Nathaniel Chalobah, Dominic Iorfa, Marvelous Nakamba, Zain Silcott-Duberry and Rio Shipston have all left the club, significantly reducing the depth available to Henrik Pedersen.
Further departures have followed through permanent transfers.
Svante Ingelsson completed a move to Stoke City for an undisclosed fee, while Olaf Kobacki also departed after joining Polish side Wisla Plock. Those exits have further increased the scale of the rebuilding project facing the coaching staff.
New Faces Arrive at Hillsborough
Despite the considerable number of departures, Sheffield Wednesday have been active in strengthening the squad.
The club has reinforced its defensive options through the arrivals of Ricardo Santos, Sil Swinkels and Jordi Liongola. The trio joined from Swansea City, Aston Villa and La Louviere respectively, with all three transfers completed for undisclosed fees.
Wednesday have also added further experience in midfield by signing former England youth international Callum Slattery on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with Scottish Premiership side Motherwell.
The club hopes these additions will provide a solid foundation upon which further recruitment can build during the remainder of the transfer window.
More Business Still Expected
Recruitment is far from complete at Hillsborough.
Reports continue to link Sheffield Wednesday with a possible return for long-serving midfielder Barry Bannan, while additional reinforcements are expected across several positions before the transfer deadline.
The need for midfield additions remains particularly obvious. At present, Slattery is reportedly the club’s only established senior central midfielder, highlighting the lack of depth available within the current squad.
The goalkeeping department also requires urgent attention.
If Pierce Charles completes his expected departure, 19-year-old academy graduate Logan Stretch would temporarily become the only recognised goalkeeper in the senior squad. Such a situation would leave Wednesday extremely short of experience in one of the most important positions on the pitch.
For that reason, bringing Murphy Cooper back to Hillsborough has become a logical priority. His previous spell with the club means he already understands the environment, while his experience at Championship and League One level makes him a strong candidate to become Wednesday’s new first-choice goalkeeper.
With competition from Plymouth Argyle and MK Dons continuing to intensify, Sheffield Wednesday are expected to push hard to complete the deal as quickly as possible, hoping to secure one of their most important signings before the new League One season gets underway.
