Southampton are working on a temporary transfer for Nottingham Forest’s defender, including a buyout option.

Southampton are working on a deal to bring Nottingham Forest centre-back Zach Abbott to St Mary’s on an initial loan arrangement that would include an option to make the move permanent next summer.

The young defender has emerged as an attractive target for Saints as they look to strengthen their defensive options before the summer transfer window closes.

Although Abbott has made only a limited number of senior appearances for Forest, his performances and development have impressed Southampton, who believe the 20-year-old has the potential to become an important player at Championship level.

Abbott currently represents England at under-20 level and has continued to attract attention despite making only 13 appearances for Nottingham Forest’s first team.

However, according to the report, deals for those alternatives now appear unlikely to happen at this stage of the transfer window.

Southampton have been careful not to spend heavily on players they do not regard as their preferred options.
