Southampton awaits the FA’s decision on Tonda Eckert’s ban as the renowned director resigns.

Southampton are expecting the Football Association to finally deliver its decision on Tonda Eckert’s punishment, with the club reportedly anticipating an outcome during the upcoming international break.

According to talkSPORT, Southampton and their head coach have been waiting for clarity since the German was charged with misconduct by the FA in July following the spying controversy involving Middlesbrough and other Championship clubs last season.

The Saints have already suffered severe consequences from the scandal. They were removed from the Championship play-offs after being found guilty of spying on three opponents, including Middlesbrough, and were subsequently handed a four-point deduction at the beginning of the current campaign.

However, the FA launched a separate investigation into Eckert personally, meaning the Southampton boss has remained under the threat of an additional sanction.

FA Decision Could Finally Arrive

The exact punishment Eckert could receive remains unclear because there is no directly comparable precedent that provides an obvious indication of what the FA might decide.

Speculation has ranged from a complete ban from football in the United Kingdom to a suspension from the touchline or a financial penalty.

Southampton will therefore be hoping that the governing body’s final decision is proportionate to the circumstances and does not create another major problem for a club that has already endured considerable punishment.

Eckert was charged in July, but several weeks have passed without confirmation of the sanction.

The club reportedly believes the international break later this month could finally bring the matter to a conclusion.

Solak Chose to Back Eckert

Southampton owner Dragan Solak made the decision to retain Eckert despite the controversy surrounding last season’s spying incident.

The club’s expulsion from the play-offs represented a major blow, but Solak opted against replacing his head coach and instead backed him to lead Southampton into the new campaign.

The owner also promised supporters that they would see an entertaining team capable of producing performances that would get fans excited.

So far, Eckert has delivered on that promise, particularly at St Mary’s.

Southampton have won all four of their home league matches this season and have scored 15 goals in the process, giving supporters plenty of reasons to feel optimistic despite the difficult circumstances surrounding the club.

Saints Impress at St Mary’s

The home form has been one of the biggest positives of Southampton’s campaign.

The Saints have played four league games at St Mary’s, winning every one of them. They have scored 15 goals and conceded only four during those victories.

Several of Southampton’s summer signings have also made a strong impression.

Goalkeeper Daniel Peretz and striker Cyle Larin have both been viewed as excellent additions, with Larin already establishing himself as the Championship’s leading scorer.

The arrival of Keven Schlotterbeck has also strengthened the squad, while the return of James Ward-Prowse has provided another major boost for the supporters.

Those additions have helped soften the disappointment surrounding the departures of Taylor Harwood-Bellis to Aston Villa and Shea Charles to Fulham.

Away Form Remains a Concern

While Southampton have been outstanding at home, their performances away from St Mary’s have been considerably less convincing.

The Saints are still searching for their first away victory of the campaign.

They began the season with a defeat against Watford before drawing away to Birmingham City. Another draw followed against Lincoln City, meaning Southampton have struggled to turn their road performances into maximum points.

That contrast between their home and away records remains an area for Eckert to address.

Nevertheless, Southampton have enough positive results to remain firmly in the promotion conversation, provided they can improve their consistency on their travels.

Wrexham Before the International Break

Southampton have one more league fixture to play before the extended international break.

They will travel to face Wrexham, with the club then expecting the FA to provide an answer on Eckert’s disciplinary case during the three-week gap.

The timing could be important.

A decision during the international break would give Southampton some time to consider their options before competitive football resumes.

It would also prevent the disciplinary situation from continuing to dominate discussions around the club for much longer.

After the break, Southampton will immediately face another major fixture when Portsmouth visit St Mary’s for a south coast derby.

That match will be one of the biggest games of the season for supporters, making clarity over Eckert’s position particularly important.

Southampton Want a Proportionate Punishment

From Southampton’s perspective, there is a belief that the club and Eckert have already paid a significant price for last season’s wrongdoing.

The EFL punishment resulted in their play-off expulsion and a four-point deduction, while Eckert has separately faced an FA investigation.

The club would therefore prefer any individual punishment to reflect the circumstances rather than result in an excessive sanction.

Eckert has previously explained that he was not completely familiar with every regulation after taking charge from Will Still in November last year.

Southampton’s preferred outcome would therefore appear to be a relatively short touchline suspension rather than a ban that prevents Eckert from continuing his managerial career.

Eckert’s Record Provides Strong Argument

There is also plenty of evidence from Eckert’s time in charge that Southampton will point towards when considering his future.

The 33-year-old has overseen 49 matches as Southampton manager, recording 30 victories, 11 draws and only eight defeats.

That gives him an impressive win percentage of 61.2 per cent.

With the team performing strongly at home and supporters continuing to back him, Southampton’s hierarchy will not want to be forced into making a major managerial decision only a few months into the season.

A lengthy FA suspension could nevertheless leave them with little choice.

According to the report, if Eckert receives a substantial suspension, Solak could be forced to reconsider the decision to retain him.

Removing a manager who has overseen such a strong start would create another difficult situation for Southampton.

The club would then have to identify a replacement capable of maintaining momentum and keeping the team involved in the promotion race.

That would be especially challenging so early in the season, when the squad and tactical approach have already been established around Eckert.

For now, however, Southampton are preparing for a decision rather than actively planning for his departure.

Ankersen Also Leaves His Role

Another notable change has taken place behind the scenes, with Rasmus Ankersen stepping down from his position as a Southampton director.

The renowned Danish football executive has become increasingly involved with sister club Goztepe in recent years.

Ankersen, 42, nevertheless remains a co-owner of Southampton through Sport Republic.

He was also present to watch the Saints in their recent match against Bristol City, showing that his departure from the director role does not mean he has completely cut ties with the club.

His resignation could therefore represent another change within Southampton’s structure at a time when the club is already awaiting an important decision over Eckert.

With the Portsmouth derby waiting immediately after the international break, Southampton desperately need clarity.
