Southampton considering a surprising January transfer for an unexpected attacking target.

The summer transfer window may have only recently closed, but the world of football transfers never seems to slow down. Clubs, agents and players are already being linked with potential moves ahead of the January window, and Southampton have now emerged in a rather unexpected rumour.

Southampton have been tipped to make a surprise move for an exciting young attacker who is reportedly considering his future at AEK Athens.

While the transfer market has gone quiet compared with the frenzy of the summer, new rumours are beginning to emerge across Europe. In the Premier League, for example, speculation has already surfaced over the future of Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, with Barcelona reportedly interested in securing his services.

For Southampton, however, the latest speculation is much less dramatic but potentially intriguing. The Saints have not been heavily involved in January transfer rumours so far, although there has already been some tentative discussion surrounding a possible mid-season move for Lech Poznan defender Wojciech Mońka.

According to a fresh report from TEAMTalk, Southampton are among the clubs keeping an eye on AEK Athens playmaker Dimitris Kaloskamis.

The 21-year-old Greece Under-21 international is reportedly eager to leave his boyhood club after becoming frustrated by his limited opportunities at senior level. Kaloskamis has allegedly requested a move away from AEK as he looks for regular first-team football and the chance to continue developing his career elsewhere.

That situation could potentially bring Southampton into the picture.

The Saints are reportedly monitoring developments closely and could consider making a move for the attacker when the January transfer window opens.

Southampton would not be alone in their interest. Championship rivals West Bromwich Albion are also said to be tracking Kaloskamis, while Spanish side Levante are reportedly interested as well.

TEAMTalk claims that a bid in the region of £3 million could potentially convince AEK Athens to allow the youngster to leave, although there is no guarantee that such a deal would be straightforward.

With several clubs apparently monitoring the situation, Southampton could face competition if they decide to turn their interest into a formal approach.

A Young Player With Plenty of Potential

Kaloskamis is not yet a household name among English football supporters, largely because his entire senior career so far has been spent in Greece.

However, the young attacker has already produced encouraging numbers during his limited opportunities with AEK Athens.

He has registered three goals and three assists for the Greek club, despite making only 22 senior appearances across two campaigns. Those numbers suggest there is plenty of potential still waiting to be developed if he can secure more consistent playing time.

His progress was also noticeable before his move to AEK.

During his time within the Panathinaikos youth system, Kaloskamis showed a natural ability to find the net. He scored 12 goals while playing for the club’s Under-18 and B teams, establishing himself as one of the more promising young players coming through the Greek football system.

That early potential eventually attracted wider international attention.

Guardian Recognition Underlines His Potential

Kaloskamis was included in The Guardian’s prestigious Next Generation list in 2022.

The annual feature identified 60 young players around the world who were considered among the most exciting prospects of their generation at that particular stage of their development.

Kaloskamis’ inclusion placed him alongside several youngsters who have since gone on to establish themselves at the highest level.

One notable example is Désiré Doué, who was included on the same list before breaking into the Paris Saint-Germain first team and becoming a prominent player in European football.

Being included in such a list does not guarantee future success, but it demonstrates that Kaloskamis was identified as a player with significant potential from an early age.

His development has continued since then, eventually leading him across Athens from Panathinaikos to AEK in 2025.

AEK Move Highlighted His Reputation

When Kaloskamis completed his move to AEK Athens in 2025, Greek media reportedly described him as one of the biggest talents in the country.

That reputation is likely to be one of the reasons why Southampton could be considering a move.

The Saints have developed a reputation for giving opportunities to young players and attempting to develop promising talent into first-team contributors. Under Tonda Eckert, that focus on youth development could make a player like Kaloskamis an appealing option.

Southampton already have examples of young players being brought into the first-team environment, with Cameron Bragg and Divin Mubama among those who have been around Eckert’s senior squad.
