Southampton has already prepared for a potential Tonda Eckert ban as the FA’s decision approaches.

Southampton remain in a period of uncertainty as they wait for the Football Association to deliver its verdict on head coach Tonda Eckert and his involvement in the spying controversy that emerged towards the end of last season.

The German coach has been charged by the FA following an investigation into Southampton’s conduct during the club’s controversial scouting and training-ground surveillance practices. Eckert could potentially receive a suspension from football, although there are several possible punishments that could be imposed depending on the outcome of the disciplinary process.

The 33-year-old has received considerable praise for the work he has done since taking responsibility for Southampton’s first-team squad last November. However, the possibility of a significant sanction remains hanging over the Saints, after the club were found guilty of breaking EFL regulations concerning spying on opponents.

Southampton Have Already Prepared for a Touchline Ban

Although Southampton cannot yet be certain what punishment Eckert will receive, they have already explored at least one possible solution.

One scenario the club have effectively rehearsed involves Eckert being prohibited from occupying the technical area while still being allowed to attend matches inside the stadium.

That possibility was demonstrated during a pre-season meeting with Preussen Munster, when Eckert watched the match from the stands rather than taking his usual place on the touchline.

The decision was not simply a random pre-season arrangement. It provided Southampton with an opportunity to consider how they might operate if the FA eventually imposes a touchline suspension on their head coach.

Sporting director Johannes Spor subsequently confirmed that the club were considering different possibilities while waiting for the investigation to reach its conclusion.

Speaking to the BBC, Spor made it clear that Southampton hoped such contingency plans would ultimately prove unnecessary. Nevertheless, the club understand that they must prepare for every potential outcome while the disciplinary process remains unresolved.

Eckert Could Still Manage From the Stands

A touchline ban would undoubtedly represent a significant inconvenience for Eckert, but it would not necessarily prevent him from continuing in his position as Southampton manager.

If the FA restricts him from the technical area, he could potentially remain inside the stadium and watch matches from the stands. From there, he would still have the opportunity to communicate with members of his coaching staff, allowing Southampton to maintain some degree of tactical control.

Instructions relating to substitutions, tactical adjustments and other decisions could be passed from Eckert to his assistants, who would then carry out those instructions from the bench.

It would clearly be a less-than-ideal arrangement for the Southampton boss. Managers generally want to be close to their players, particularly during competitive Championship matches when decisions can need to be made within seconds.

However, compared with losing Eckert altogether, a touchline suspension would be a considerably easier problem for Southampton to manage.

The club have placed considerable faith in the German coach since his appointment, and his progress with the squad has earned him plenty of support. Consequently, a punishment that allows him to remain involved could be viewed as the least damaging option.

A Football Suspension Would Change Everything

The more serious concern for Southampton is the possibility that Eckert could be suspended from football altogether.

Such a punishment would prevent him from simply watching Saints matches from the stands and could leave the club searching for a temporary solution while attempting to preserve their longer-term plans.

There is precedent for a severe sanction in a similar situation. Bev Priestman received a one-year suspension from football following the spying controversy surrounding Canada at the 2024 Summer Olympics.

If Eckert were to receive a comparable punishment, Southampton would face a much more complicated situation.

A lengthy ban would mean the German coach could potentially be unavailable to attend matches or participate in football-related activities during the period of his suspension. That would represent a far greater disruption than simply moving him from the dugout to a seat in the stadium.

Timing Makes the Situation More Difficult

The uncertainty is particularly awkward because Southampton’s season is already underway.

Had the investigation been completed before the campaign began, the club would have had greater opportunity to establish a clear plan for dealing with Eckert’s absence. Instead, they are being forced to prepare for multiple possibilities while competitive football continues.

Southampton may still want Eckert to remain their long-term head coach, meaning that replacing him permanently would not necessarily be the preferred solution.

If he receives a short touchline suspension, the club can potentially work around it. If the punishment becomes significantly more severe, however, Southampton may have no choice but to consider alternative arrangements.

Middlesbrough Will Have Little Sympathy

There is another layer to this story because Middlesbrough were directly involved when the spying controversy first came to light.

The revelations emerged before Southampton’s play-off semi-final meeting with Middlesbrough, with the incident becoming a major talking point around the tie. Middlesbrough ultimately progressed to the final, adding another significant chapter to a controversy that Southampton would undoubtedly rather forget.

From Middlesbrough’s perspective, there is therefore unlikely to be much sympathy for Eckert or Southampton as they await the FA’s verdict.

Boro may have moved beyond the incident as they concentrate on the new campaign, but memories of what happened during the previous season will not disappear overnight.

The two clubs are scheduled to meet again in November, meaning the fixture could carry additional emotional significance depending on what happens with Eckert before then.

The November Meetings Could Be Tense

At this stage, it is impossible to say with certainty whether Eckert will still be Southampton’s manager when the sides meet in November.

Much will depend on the FA’s eventual decision and the severity of any punishment handed down to the German coach.
