Bristol City are reportedly working hard to convince Steven Gerrard to take over as their next manager, as the former Liverpool captain considers making a return to coaching in England.

The Championship side are believed to be putting forward a compelling long-term project in an effort to attract the 45-year-old, who has been out of management since departing Al-Ettifaq in 2025 after a spell in the Saudi Pro League.

Interest Also Emerging from Burnley

Gerrard is not short of potential opportunities, with Burnley—recently relegated—also linked with a move to appoint him. Both clubs present different types of challenges and ambitions, but they share a common appeal as platforms for a high-profile managerial comeback.

It is understood that Gerrard is open to working in the EFL Championship, viewing it as a competitive environment where he can rebuild his reputation and demonstrate his capabilities.

A Potential Reunion with Roy Hodgson

Should Gerrard accept the role at Ashton Gate, he would follow in the footsteps of Roy Hodgson, who is currently in temporary charge of Bristol City. Hodgson, who previously managed both England and Liverpool during Gerrard’s playing career, is only overseeing the team on a short-term basis.

Taking over from a figure with such experience would add another layer of intrigue to Gerrard’s possible appointment, marking a symbolic passing of the baton between generations.

Desire to Return to Management

After stepping away from his role in Saudi Arabia, Gerrard is believed to be eager to re-enter the managerial world as soon as possible. His time away from the dugout has not diminished his ambition, and he is now carefully considering his next move.

The Championship is increasingly viewed as an attractive destination for managers seeking to rebuild or enhance their reputations, offering both intensity and opportunity.

Influence of Frank Lampard’s Recent Success

Part of the renewed interest in the Championship among high-profile former players has been influenced by the resurgence of Frank Lampard. His work with Coventry City has earned widespread praise, particularly for the way he embraced the challenges of the English Football League and gradually rebuilt his standing.

Lampard’s willingness to work his way back up has not gone unnoticed among his contemporaries. Many from the same generation, including Gerrard, have taken note of the respect he has regained through persistence and adaptability.

This shift in perception has encouraged others to view the Championship not as a step down, but as a valuable proving ground.

Previous Managerial Experience

Gerrard’s last managerial role in England came with Aston Villa, where he served until October 2022. His tenure there followed a successful period with Rangers, where he famously guided the club to the Scottish Premiership title.

That achievement at Rangers remains a highlight of his managerial career, showcasing his ability to build a winning team and deliver silverware. However, his time at Aston Villa proved more challenging, ultimately leading to his departure.

A Crucial Career Decision Ahead

Now at a crossroads, Gerrard faces an important decision regarding his next step in management. Both Bristol City and Burnley offer opportunities to take charge of ambitious clubs with the potential for growth.

For Bristol City, securing Gerrard would represent a significant statement of intent, underlining their ambition to compete at a higher level. For Gerrard himself, it would provide a platform to re-establish his credentials and continue developing as a manager.

Championship as a Platform for Revival

The EFL Championship has increasingly become a stage where managers can rebuild their reputations and demonstrate their tactical acumen. Its competitive nature demands resilience, adaptability, and consistency—qualities that Gerrard will need to showcase if he is to succeed.

With interest from multiple clubs and a clear desire to return to the sidelines, the coming weeks could prove decisive in shaping the next chapter of his managerial career.
