Talented Middlesbrough youth player ‘gutted’ after undergoing surgery due to new injury setback.

Middlesbrough youngster Harley Hunt has been dealt another frustrating injury setback after undergoing surgery during the summer, delaying what had been hoped would be an important season in his development.

The highly-rated teenage defender now faces an extended spell on the sidelines after the operation, with the recovery period expected to keep him out of action for around three to four months. The injury is understood to involve his hamstring, although the club has not publicly confirmed the exact nature of the problem.

The latest blow comes at an unfortunate time for Hunt, who had been looking to build on the progress he made after returning to full fitness at the end of last season. Instead, the 18-year-old must now begin another rehabilitation process after seeing his preparations for the new campaign interrupted before it had truly begun.

Hunt has been regarded as one of Middlesbrough’s brightest young prospects since arriving from Swindon Town two years ago. His performances after making the move quickly caught the attention of then-head coach Michael Carrick, who wasted little time integrating the promising centre-back into the first-team environment.

During the opening stages of the 2024/25 Championship campaign, Hunt became a regular figure on the substitutes’ bench as Carrick rewarded his development with increasing involvement around the senior squad. Those opportunities reflected the coaching staff’s belief that he had the potential to make the step up despite his young age.

His breakthrough eventually arrived in the Carabao Cup when he made his senior debut for Middlesbrough in the defeat against Stoke City. Although the result was disappointing for the club, it represented a significant personal milestone for the academy graduate, who had worked hard to earn his first competitive appearance for the senior side.

Unfortunately, that promising momentum did not continue. Hunt’s progress was soon disrupted by a series of injuries that prevented him from establishing himself around the first team. Instead of pushing for more appearances, he found himself spending extended periods working on his recovery rather than developing on the pitch.

Those fitness problems proved particularly frustrating because they arrived just as he appeared to be moving closer to regular senior involvement. The interruptions slowed his development and limited his opportunities to impress during a crucial stage of his career.

As a result, Hunt did not feature in another Middlesbrough first-team matchday squad for the majority of last season. It was not until the first leg of the Championship play-off semi-final against Southampton that he returned to the senior picture, earning a place among the substitutes after finally recovering from his earlier setbacks.

Although he did not play in that fixture, simply returning to the squad represented a positive step after months of rehabilitation. It also offered encouragement that he could put his injury frustrations behind him and focus on competing for more opportunities during the following campaign.

At the conclusion of last season, Hunt appeared optimistic about what lay ahead. Having finally regained his fitness, he reflected positively on overcoming the difficult challenges he had faced throughout the year.

Writing on Instagram in May, the defender expressed satisfaction at ending the season healthy once again despite the obstacles he had encountered. He said he had taken plenty of positives from a campaign overshadowed by injuries and looked forward enthusiastically to the next season, believing brighter days were ahead.

However, those hopes have now been interrupted by another significant setback before the new campaign has even properly begun.

After undergoing surgery, Hunt returned to social media to share his disappointment with supporters. He admitted he was devastated to have suffered another injury at the start of the season and acknowledged that words could not fully capture how frustrated he felt about the situation.

Despite that disappointment, Hunt also struck an optimistic tone by confirming that the operation had been successful. He vowed to work hard throughout his rehabilitation and promised to return stronger once he had completed his recovery.

The young defender also took the opportunity to thank everyone who had supported him during the difficult period leading up to the surgery. He expressed appreciation for those who had helped him over the previous week as he began another lengthy spell on the road back to fitness.

His injury also explains why he was absent from Middlesbrough’s recent pre-season friendly against Celtic. Hunt had travelled with the squad during their training camp in Portugal, suggesting he remained part of the club’s plans before suffering the latest problem.

His omission from the Celtic match had initially prompted questions, but the confirmation of his surgery has now clarified why he was unavailable for selection.

While Hunt’s injury represents disappointing news for Middlesbrough, there have been more encouraging developments elsewhere within the squad.

Both Kyle Joseph and Alfie Jones have returned to training earlier than expected, providing head coach Kim Hellberg with a welcome boost ahead of the start of the Championship season.

Following the friendly against Celtic, Hellberg had suggested that both players would likely resume training sometime during the following week. However, club footage released from Rockliffe showed Joseph and Jones already back working alongside their teammates.

Although Middlesbrough will continue to manage both players carefully as they complete their recoveries, their return to training with more than three weeks remaining before the opening Championship fixture is viewed as a significant positive.

Having additional time to build fitness before the competitive season begins increases the likelihood that both players will be available for selection when league action gets underway.

Joseph has been recovering from the ankle injury he sustained during the second leg of Middlesbrough’s Championship play-off semi-final against Millwall. The striker had been making encouraging progress before suffering that setback, and his return to the training pitch represents another important milestone in his rehabilitation.

Meanwhile, Jones has also overcome a difficult period after seeing his own campaign disrupted by injury.

The defender had impressed during the first half of last season before suffering an injury in the Boxing Day draw against Blackburn. That setback ruled him out from the end of December and forced him to miss the remainder of the domestic campaign.

Despite those injury concerns, Jones was still selected for Canada’s World Cup squad. Unfortunately, he experienced another setback during the tournament after sustaining a muscle injury while away on international duty.

Fortunately for Middlesbrough, Hellberg later revealed that the muscle issue was only a minor concern. Jones has now completed his recovery and returned to full training with the rest of the squad.

As preparations continue for the new Championship season, Middlesbrough will be encouraged by the progress of Joseph and Jones while remaining disappointed for Hunt, whose promising career has once again been interrupted by injury.
