Three free agents QPR could target after Amadou Mbengue’s injury.

QPR could now turn to the free-agent market as they search for defensive cover following Amadou Mbengue’s season-ending injury.

The Hoops are facing a difficult spell without the influential defender, who suffered a knee injury during the clash with Derby County. His absence was noticeable at the weekend as QPR suffered a 3-0 defeat away to Birmingham City in their latest Championship fixture.

Mbengue, 24, has developed into an important member of the QPR squad since arriving at the club in 2025. He has featured 53 times across all competitions, scoring two goals and providing one assist during that period. Before making the move to west London, the defender had spells with FC Metz and Reading.

Despite the setback, QPR remain close to the Championship play-off positions after their opening 11 league matches. Their next challenge comes on Saturday, when they travel to face current table toppers Swansea City. With Mbengue unavailable for the foreseeable future, the club could assess the free-agent market for an experienced player capable of providing immediate competition and depth.

Here are three unattached defenders QPR could consider following Mbengue’s injury.

Adam Webster

Adam Webster could be an attractive short-term option for QPR. The experienced centre-back became a free agent after Brighton and Hove Albion decided to end their association with him at the conclusion of last season. He has not yet found a new club, although Portsmouth have reportedly been interested in bringing him in.

At 31, Webster has considerable experience at the highest levels of English football and could offer QPR a dependable presence while they cope with Mbengue’s absence. During his time at Brighton, he became an important part of the club’s rise and played his role in helping the Seagulls establish themselves as a Premier League side.

For QPR, his experience could be particularly valuable. The club are competing near the top end of the Championship and may not want to disrupt their progress because of one defensive injury. Bringing in someone with Webster’s background could provide manager and players with greater confidence while also giving the squad another experienced option at centre-back.

Jamaal Lascelles

Another name QPR could look at is Jamaal Lascelles. The defender’s contract with Leicester City expired in late June, leaving him without a club. Despite being 32, Lascelles could still provide valuable experience and physical presence if the Hoops decide that another centre-back is required.

Lascelles has accumulated almost 350 appearances during his professional career and spent a significant portion of that time with Newcastle United. He made around 250 appearances for the Magpies, establishing himself as a respected figure during his long stay at St James’ Park.

The former Nottingham Forest defender could offer more than simply cover on the pitch. His leadership qualities and experience could make him a useful addition to the QPR dressing room, particularly with younger members of the squad. Having played a substantial number of matches at senior level, Lascelles would be capable of sharing his knowledge with less experienced defenders.

The key question would be whether QPR believe his current fitness and form are sufficient for an immediate return to Championship football. Nevertheless, his availability makes him a player worth considering.

Darragh Lenihan

Darragh Lenihan is another experienced defender who could enter QPR’s thinking. The Irishman has endured injury problems over the past couple of years and would need to rediscover his best level, but he remains available after Middlesbrough ended his contract four months ago.

Lenihan joined Middlesbrough in 2022 after leaving Blackburn Rovers, where he had established himself as an important player. During his time at Boro, he made 53 appearances before departing, while his previous spell at Blackburn demonstrated his ability to play an important role at Championship level.

His recent injury record would naturally be something QPR would have to examine carefully before making a decision. However, the defender’s familiarity with the Championship could make the transition easier if the club decides to bring him in.

With Mbengue sidelined, QPR need to ensure they have enough defensive depth to maintain their challenge near the play-off places. Webster, Lascelles and Lenihan all offer different qualities, but each could provide experienced cover during a demanding period.

QPR’s decision will ultimately depend on fitness, financial terms and how quickly any potential signing could contribute. With Swansea next on the schedule, the Hoops may need to move quickly if they want to strengthen before their defensive options become stretched. Mbengue’s absence is a setback, but the free-agent market could give QPR an opportunity to find a practical solution without waiting for the January transfer window.

That could prove especially important if injuries or suspensions create further problems, because maintaining consistency at the back may ultimately determine whether QPR can turn their promising start into a genuine promotion push this season.
