Tonda Eckert’s potential exit from Southampton gains momentum with Italian sides now interested.
Southampton manager Tonda Eckert could still leave the club this summer after a fresh twist emerged regarding his future following the fallout from the club’s spying scandal.
Southampton’s hopes of returning to the Premier League were dramatically destroyed after the club were expelled from the Championship play-offs following disciplinary action from the EFL.
The punishment came after the club admitted to multiple breaches of league rules involving the filming of opposition training sessions ahead of matches.
The incidents reportedly involved spying on preparations carried out by Oxford United and Ipswich Town, among others.
Following the investigation, Southampton received severe sanctions that included immediate removal from the play-offs along with a four-point deduction to be applied next season.
The decision left the club facing a hugely difficult challenge ahead of the new Championship campaign.
Southampton Already Facing Huge Disadvantage
Because of the points deduction, Southampton will begin next season at a disadvantage before a ball has even been kicked.
The setback has increased scrutiny on everyone connected to the club, including Eckert, whose future at St. Mary’s is now far from certain.
Although the German remains Southampton’s head coach for the moment, uncertainty continues to grow surrounding whether he will still be in charge when the next campaign begins in August.
Adding further complications, the The Football Association has now launched its own investigation into the spying controversy.
That separate investigation could potentially lead to further consequences, both for Southampton and for Eckert personally.
At this stage, the full impact of the FA’s involvement remains unclear, but concerns are increasing that additional disciplinary action could follow.
Italian Clubs Monitoring Eckert Situation
Despite the controversy surrounding Southampton, Eckert is reportedly attracting significant interest from clubs in Italy.
According to journalist Rudy Galetti, several Serie A teams are closely monitoring the Southampton manager following the impressive form his side produced during the second half of last season.
Southampton enjoyed a remarkable resurgence after a difficult first half of the campaign and eventually put together a 19-match unbeaten run that propelled them into fourth place in the Championship standings.
That dramatic improvement enhanced Eckert’s growing reputation as one of the most promising young coaches in European football.
As a result, a number of clubs in Italy’s top division are now believed to be considering him as a potential managerial option heading into the summer.
Although no official offers have reportedly been submitted at this stage, interest is said to be increasing behind the scenes.
Several Major Serie A Clubs Searching For Managers
The timing of the speculation is significant because multiple major Italian clubs are currently searching for new head coaches.
AC Milan and Napoli are both among the clubs expected to make managerial changes this summer.
Meanwhile, uncertainty also surrounds the future of Luciano Spalletti at Juventus, meaning another high-profile vacancy could potentially emerge in Serie A.
Elsewhere, Lazio and Atalanta are also preparing for managerial transitions.
However, reports suggest Gennaro Gattuso and Maurizio Sarri are currently favourites to take charge at those respective clubs.
Although the identities of the teams specifically interested in Eckert have not yet been publicly confirmed, it is clear there are several possible opportunities emerging across Italian football.
Eckert’s Language Skills Increase His Appeal
One factor reportedly making Eckert an attractive option for clubs abroad is his ability to speak fluent Italian.
That linguistic advantage could help him adapt quickly to life in Serie A and communicate effectively within an Italian dressing room.
The Southampton boss has previously also been linked with a return to Germany, but the latest reports indicate that Italy may now represent the strongest possibility should he leave England.
At just 33 years old, Eckert is still viewed as one of the brightest young coaching talents in Europe despite the controversy currently surrounding him.
His tactical approach and Southampton’s dramatic improvement during the second half of last season have clearly not gone unnoticed elsewhere.
Spying Scandal Continues To Cloud Situation
However, while Eckert’s coaching credentials remain highly respected, the spying scandal continues to cast a huge shadow over his future.
The ongoing investigations have significantly complicated matters and could yet lead to severe consequences for the manager.
There remains uncertainty over whether Eckert could potentially face individual punishment depending on the findings of the FA investigation.
Some reports have even suggested the possibility of a football ban cannot be completely ruled out at this stage.
That uncertainty makes the situation extremely difficult for both Southampton and any clubs considering a move for him.
Although his achievements during the second half of the season attracted admiration, the controversy surrounding the spying allegations has damaged the overall perception of the club’s campaign.
Southampton Yet To Make Final Decision
Despite mounting pressure, Southampton are reportedly reluctant to rush into a final decision regarding Eckert’s future.
Club officials are said to be carefully assessing the situation before determining whether the German should remain in charge.
Reports indicate his position is under significant scrutiny following the play-off expulsion, particularly given the financial and sporting consequences the punishment carries.
Missing out on promotion represented a massive setback for Southampton, especially after the team’s impressive late-season form suggested they had genuine momentum heading into the play-offs.
Instead, Hull City ultimately went on to defeat Middlesbrough in the final and secure promotion to the Premier League.
That outcome has only intensified frustration surrounding Southampton’s collapse and the decisions that led to their expulsion.
Strong Finish To Season Enhanced Eckert’s Reputation
Before the scandal erupted, Eckert had earned widespread praise for transforming Southampton’s fortunes during the latter stages of the campaign.
In addition to their 19-game unbeaten run in the league, the Saints also reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
Those achievements significantly strengthened the manager’s reputation and suggested Southampton were building serious momentum under his leadership.
For much of the second half of the season, Eckert appeared to be one of the rising stars of Championship management.
However, the spying controversy has dramatically altered the conversation around his future.
Instead of focusing purely on his footballing achievements, attention has now shifted toward possible punishments and uncertainty over whether he will even remain in management.
Italy Could Offer Fresh Start
Given the growing uncertainty in England, the possibility of moving to Italy may become increasingly attractive for Eckert.
Provided he avoids serious sanctions from the FA investigation, a move abroad could offer the opportunity for a fresh start away from the intense scrutiny currently surrounding Southampton.
That possibility would become even more appealing if one of Italy’s larger clubs formally entered the race for his signature.
At the same time, it remains unclear whether Southampton supporters would even fully welcome Eckert staying at the club after the embarrassment and damage caused by the play-off expulsion.
The financial consequences of missing promotion, combined with the four-point deduction for next season, have left the club facing a hugely difficult road ahead.
For now, Eckert remains Southampton manager, but with investigations ongoing and interest emerging from Italy, his future appears increasingly uncertain.
