Traore is set to depart West Ham, along with nine other players released following relegation.
West Ham United have confirmed a significant squad overhaul following their relegation from the Premier League, with Adama Traore among nine players set to leave the club as preparations begin for life in the Championship.
The Hammers’ fate was sealed on the final day of the season when Tottenham Hotspur secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Everton, a result that ensured Spurs remained in the top flight while condemning West Ham to relegation. The outcome brought an end to the East London club’s 14-year stay in the Premier League and marked one of the most disappointing chapters in their recent history.
Following the club’s drop into the second tier, speculation immediately surrounded the future of manager Nuno Espirito Santo. Questions were raised over whether the Portuguese coach would continue in charge after failing to guide the team to safety during a difficult campaign.
Despite the uncertainty, reports from Standard Sport confirmed that Nuno will remain at the helm and oversee the rebuilding process ahead of next season. However, the first stages of that rebuild are already underway, with a number of departures announced as the club begins reshaping its squad.
Among the most notable exits is winger Adama Traore. The Spaniard joined West Ham during the January transfer window after completing a move from fellow London side Fulham. Signed for a relatively modest fee in the winter market, there was hope that Traore’s pace, power, and Premier League experience could provide a much-needed boost during the club’s fight against relegation.
Unfortunately, his spell at the London Stadium failed to produce the desired impact. Traore struggled to establish himself as a consistent attacking threat and was unable to make a decisive contribution during the crucial months of the campaign. Across nine appearances for the Hammers, he failed to score a goal and was unable to help the club avoid the drop.
As a result, his time in East London will come to an end after only a brief stay. The winger’s departure highlights the extent of the changes taking place at West Ham following a season that fell well below expectations.
Another experienced figure set to leave is veteran goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski. The former Arsenal shot-stopper returned to West Ham midway through the season after previously departing the club on a free transfer during the previous summer. His return was viewed as an effort to add leadership and experience to the squad during a challenging period.
Fabianski brought valuable professionalism and familiarity to the dressing room, but he was ultimately unable to prevent the club’s relegation. Now, after a second spell with the Hammers, the experienced goalkeeper will once again move on as part of the club’s summer clear-out.
Defender Axel Disasi is also among those departing, although his situation differs from the others. The French centre-back joined West Ham on loan from Chelsea and quickly established himself as an important figure in the team. His performances at the heart of the defence earned widespread praise from supporters, many of whom regarded him as one of the club’s standout performers during a difficult season.
Disasi formed a strong partnership in central defence and became a popular figure among the fanbase thanks to his commitment and consistency. Across all competitions, he made 17 appearances for the Hammers and played a key role whenever selected.
However, with his loan agreement now coming to an end, the defender will return to his parent club, Chelsea. While West Ham supporters may have hoped for a permanent deal, the relegation to the Championship makes such a move increasingly unlikely, meaning his spell in East London has reached its conclusion.
Alongside the senior departures, a number of academy and youth-team players will also leave the club when their contracts expire. West Ham have confirmed that Michael Forbes, Junior Robinson, Tyron Akpata, Daniel Rigge, David Chigwada, and Tom Wooster will all move on this summer.
The departures reflect the club’s ongoing evaluation of its development system and the difficult decisions that often accompany the end of a season. While each player had ambitions of progressing through the ranks and establishing themselves within the first-team picture, they will now seek opportunities elsewhere as they continue their careers.
For the young players involved, leaving a club with West Ham’s reputation for youth development represents the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. Many will be hopeful of securing new clubs where they can continue their growth and potentially earn regular senior football.
The announcement of nine departures is likely to be only the beginning of what could be a busy summer at the London Stadium. Relegation often triggers significant changes within a squad, and there remains considerable uncertainty surrounding several high-profile members of the current team.
A number of key players have already been linked with potential moves away from the club as speculation continues to gather pace. Among the names attracting attention is captain Jarrod Bowen, who remains one of West Ham’s most valuable assets despite the club’s disappointing campaign.
Bowen has consistently been one of the Hammers’ standout performers in recent years and is expected to attract interest from clubs eager to strengthen their attacking options. His future remains unclear, and any decision regarding a possible transfer could have a major impact on the club’s rebuilding plans.
Midfielder Mateus Fernandes is another player whose future has become the subject of increasing speculation. The talented midfielder has been linked with a potential departure as clubs monitor his situation following West Ham’s relegation.
Should Bowen, Fernandes, or other senior players leave during the transfer window, the club may face an even larger rebuilding task than initially anticipated. At the same time, player sales could provide valuable funds to strengthen the squad and help Nuno shape a team capable of challenging for an immediate return to the Premier League.
The coming weeks are expected to be crucial for West Ham as decisions are made regarding the futures of several first-team stars. With Championship football awaiting next season, the club must strike a balance between retaining enough quality to compete for promotion and managing the financial realities that often follow relegation.
For now, however, attention remains focused on those who have already been confirmed as departures. The exits of Traore, Fabianski, Disasi, and six academy players mark the beginning of a new era at West Ham. Their departures signal the start of a major transition as the Hammers seek to recover from the disappointment of relegation and begin plotting a route back to the Premier League.
After spending 14 consecutive years among England’s elite, West Ham now face the challenge of rebuilding both on and off the pitch. With Nuno Espirito Santo remaining in charge and a squad reshaping process already underway, the club will hope that the difficult decisions being made this summer can lay the foundations for a successful promotion push in the season ahead.
