Who is Alex Eala’s coach? Joan Bosch steering youthful star’s journey to the top
Alex Eala’s climb up the WTA rankings has been one of the major storylines of 2025 thus far.
The 19-year-old Filipina’s performance in the Miami Open in March 2025 put her into the top 100 for the first time, making her the first woman from her country to do so.
Eala’s impressive performance in Miami saw her defeat Jelena Ostapenko, Madison Keys, and Iga Swiatek, paving the way for more success this season.
She is scheduled to make her Grand Slam main draw debut at the French Open and may also make her Wimbledon and US Open debuts later this year.
Her affiliation with the Rafa Nadal Academy is widely known, although she has lately been mentored in particular by Joan Bosch.
Here, we’ll tell you all you need to know about the guy who has been driving Eala’s recent success.
Playing and coaching careers
Bosch briefly played tennis in the 1990s, but his participation in the sport has mostly been teaching.
His best-known work is with Spanish great Carlos Moya, where he coached the former world number one during his starring role in Spain’s 2004 Davis Cup victory and many ATP Tour victories.
He is also well-known for his time as a head coach at the Rafael Nadal Academy.
Bosch is now the U18 head coach of the Manacor academy, which opened in 2016.
Along with Nadal, other notable personalities associated with the institution include Moya, Toni Nadal, and former WTA star Anabel Medina Garrigues.
Work with Eala.
Despite playing a key role at the Rafa Nadal Academy, Bosch has been Eala’s travelling coach in recent weeks.
The Filipina graduated from the program in 2023 and has since worked her way up the WTA rankings.
Eala was rated 140th before the Miami Open last month, having previously peaked at world No. 134 in the WTA Rankings, but her performance drove her to a new career high of 75th.
The Filipina is on the verge of breaking into the top 70, and she is one of just a few teens in the top 100 in the WTA rankings.
During an interview with Punto de Break during the Madrid Open, Bosch praised his charge and predicted her future success.
He said, “At the Academy, we are clear that this is a special project, because it has also borne the hallmark of the Rafa Nadal Academy since she arrived at the age of 12.”
“If we hadn’t seen it with such excitement, it wouldn’t work. Alex is young, talented, and has a lot of room for improvement, which is exactly what we coaches like. When they bring in a very accomplished player, you don’t sure what to say to her.
“With so much possibility for improvement, it’s natural to want to explore how far we can go.
“The project is doing nicely, but it is not due to my efforts. I put a lot of faith in all of the coaches at the Academy. Thanks to them, I’m able to include a few elements into these competitions.
“It surprised me how much we accomplished in Miami. I thought she might be in the top 100, but everything occurred so fast.
“I trusted Alex from the start, even though Toni Nadal was the first to recommend her to me. She’s a highly educated and coachable girl, and everything works out for her.”
