Boro agree on a transfer deal after medical and terms are finalized.

Middlesbrough defender Fin Munroe has completed a season-long loan move to League One club Blackpool after successfully recovering from a minor pre-season injury.

The full-back has now finalised his temporary transfer to Bloomfield Road, giving him the opportunity to gain valuable first-team experience during the 2026/27 campaign.

Munroe only joined Middlesbrough from Aston Villa in January, but his opportunities with the Championship club were limited during the second half of last season.

The youngster made three substitute appearances in the Championship after arriving at the Riverside, but he was unable to establish himself as a regular member of the first-team squad.

A move away on loan had therefore been considered as a way of providing him with more consistent competitive football.

Blackpool move finally completed

Blackpool had already held discussions with Middlesbrough about bringing Munroe to the club earlier during the summer.

However, those negotiations were temporarily put on hold after the defender suffered a minor injury during pre-season.

The issue prevented the proposed transfer from immediately going ahead, leaving both clubs waiting for Munroe to recover before finalising the agreement.

The defender has now returned to fitness and has completed his season-long switch to Blackpool.

The League One club will hope Munroe can quickly establish himself as an important part of their defensive setup as they prepare for the beginning of their league campaign.

Blackpool manager Ian Evatt expressed his delight at completing the signing and believes the defender can make a significant contribution to his team.

“We are delighted to have added Finley to our ranks, providing further quality to our backline ahead of the league campaign kicking off this weekend,” Evatt said.

The Blackpool boss clearly sees Munroe as a player capable of strengthening his defensive options.

Evatt also praised the quality the young full-back possesses and highlighted his desire to continue improving.

“He is someone who has undoubted quality and is keen to progress even further here at Bloomfield Road,” he added.

The manager expects Munroe to play an important role on the left side of the team throughout the season.

“I believe he will be a key player for us on the left-hand side of our team and I can’t wait to start working with him,” Evatt continued.

Munroe excited by Blackpool opportunity

For Munroe, the move represents an opportunity to play regular senior football and continue his development away from Middlesbrough.

The defender appears enthusiastic about working under Evatt and believes the manager’s tactical approach and ambitions for the season made Blackpool an attractive destination.

Munroe revealed that he had held positive conversations with the Blackpool boss before agreeing to the move.

“I’ve had some really positive discussions with the gaffer,” Munroe said.

He explained that the way Evatt wants his side to play was one of the factors that attracted him to the club.

“The way he wants to play and the ambitions he has for this season really attracted me to the club,” the defender added.

Munroe also believes the move represents a good fit for his career at this stage.

“I think it’s a good fit for me,” he said.

The temporary switch should provide him with considerably more opportunities to play competitive football than he was likely to receive at Middlesbrough.

Middlesbrough’s left-back situation

Munroe’s departure comes at a time when Middlesbrough’s left-back options are also undergoing significant changes.

Last week, the club decided not to allocate Alex Bangura a squad number for the upcoming season.

That decision effectively signalled that Bangura is available to leave Middlesbrough before the transfer window closes.

His potential departure would reduce the number of natural left-backs available to head coach Kim Hellberg.

However, Boro have already strengthened that position with the arrival of Max Arfsten.

The American full-back joined Middlesbrough from Columbus Crew in a deal worth approximately £5 million and is expected to begin the campaign as Hellberg’s first-choice option on the left side of the defence.

Arfsten’s arrival has therefore changed the pecking order considerably.

With Munroe now heading to Blackpool and Bangura also expected to leave, Arfsten appears to have a clear path towards regular first-team football.

Neto Borges could provide cover

There is also another player who could help Middlesbrough deal with the reduced depth at left-back.

Neto Borges has recently emerged as a possible option to provide cover in the position.

The Brazilian spent last season on loan at Bristol City, and there had previously been an expectation that he would leave Middlesbrough permanently this summer.

However, Hellberg has recently spoken positively about Borges and appears increasingly open to keeping the versatile defender at the club.

Borges demonstrated his flexibility during Middlesbrough’s Carabao Cup victory over Wrexham, when he operated at centre-back.

His ability to play in multiple defensive roles could make him a valuable squad member for Hellberg, particularly if Bangura departs before the end of the transfer window.

The manager’s recent comments suggested that he is pleased with Borges’ attitude and versatility and would be happy to continue working with him.

That could represent a significant change in the defender’s expected future.

Munroe’s next challenge

For Munroe, meanwhile, the focus will now shift towards making the most of his time at Blackpool.

His limited involvement at Middlesbrough following his January arrival means regular football will be crucial to his development.
