Wrexham targets Southampton transfer raid as Man City deal approaches — West Brom may oppose it.

Wrexham are continuing to show their ambition in the transfer market and could now turn their attention towards a Southampton forward who has struggled to establish himself on the south coast.

Phil Parkinson already has an impressive collection of attacking options at his disposal ahead of Wrexham’s first full Championship campaign of the 2026/27 season. However, the club appear determined to add even more quality and depth to their frontline.

According to Darren Witcoop, writing on X, Wrexham hold an interest in Southampton forward Cameron Archer and are keeping a close eye on his situation.

The possibility of a move could become increasingly realistic in the coming weeks, particularly because Southampton are reportedly nearing an agreement to sign Manchester City striker Divin Mubama on a season-long loan.

Should Mubama arrive at St Mary’s, competition for places in the Southampton attack would increase further and could potentially make Archer’s departure more likely.

Wrexham monitoring Cameron Archer

Archer has endured a difficult spell at Southampton since making his move to the club, and his position within the squad appears increasingly uncertain.

The 24-year-old made 30 league appearances last season under Will Still and Tonda Eckert but accumulated fewer than 1,000 minutes of Championship football.

Despite his limited opportunities, Archer still managed to contribute four goals and three assists.

Those numbers demonstrate that the former Aston Villa academy player can still provide an attacking threat when given sufficient opportunities. However, he struggled to establish himself as a regular starter and did not appear to feature prominently in Eckert’s plans for the future.

There was also interest from Rangers in Archer during the January transfer window, although that potential move ultimately failed to materialise.

His prospects of remaining at Southampton now look even less certain following the club’s decision to sign Lewis Dobbin for a reported fee of around £9 million earlier this summer.

The expected arrival of Mubama from Manchester City could further strengthen the argument for Archer to seek a fresh opportunity elsewhere.

West Brom face competition from Wrexham

West Bromwich Albion have reportedly maintained a long-standing interest in Archer, meaning they could be particularly unhappy if Wrexham manage to beat them to his signature.

The Baggies have been linked with the striker for some time, but Wrexham’s growing financial strength and ambitious recruitment strategy could make them serious competitors for his services.

Despite already having several forwards available, Parkinson appears keen to ensure that his team possesses enough quality and depth to handle the demands of Championship football.

Wrexham can already call upon Kieffer Moore, Bailey Cadamarteri, Nathan Broadhead, Ryan Hardie, Davis Keillor-Dunn and Josh Windass in attacking areas.

Adding Archer to that group would give Parkinson another player with extensive Championship experience and a proven record of scoring goals at second-tier level.

Archer’s Championship record makes him attractive

Although Archer’s recent Southampton spell has been underwhelming, his record in the Championship tells a very different story.

Across 70 appearances in the second tier, the striker has scored 22 goals and supplied 10 assists.

That record is particularly impressive considering that a significant proportion of his appearances have come from the substitutes’ bench.

Last season, Archer was restricted to just 19 starts in the Championship, meaning his overall numbers could arguably have been even stronger had he been given a more consistent run in the side.

The striker has previously demonstrated his ability to thrive at this level during loan spells with Preston North End and Middlesbrough.

His time at Middlesbrough was particularly impressive.

Archer’s Middlesbrough numbers stand out

During his 2023 spell with Middlesbrough, Archer featured 20 times and scored 11 goals.

He also produced six assists, recorded an expected goals figure of 6.37 and created 25 chances.

Those statistics helped establish his reputation as one of the more dangerous young forwards in the Championship and attracted the attention of Sheffield United.

The Blades eventually paid £18 million for his services in the summer of 2023, highlighting just how highly he was regarded at the time.

Archer subsequently returned to Aston Villa before leaving the club again just 36 days later, with Southampton paying approximately £15 million to bring him to the south coast.

Unfortunately for the forward, his two years at Southampton have not produced the consistency expected following that sizeable investment.

A move to Wrexham could therefore provide Archer with an opportunity to restart his career and rediscover the form that made him such a sought-after player in the Championship.

Wrexham have money to spend

Wrexham’s interest in Archer should not come as a major surprise given their activity in the current transfer window.

The Welsh club have already invested approximately £5 million in Danny Imray and another £3 million in Ben Whiteman.

They are also reportedly closing in on Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson for around £8 million, with the shot-stopper expected to become their new first-choice goalkeeper.

Those deals demonstrate that Wrexham are prepared to spend heavily to build a squad capable of competing at the top end of the Championship.

Their recruitment has increasingly focused on players with either significant second-tier experience or the quality required to make an immediate impact at that level.

Archer would fit that profile perfectly.

Archer could strengthen an already strong attack

At first glance, Wrexham’s need for another striker may appear questionable given the number of attacking players already available to Parkinson.

However, the demands of a Championship campaign are considerably greater than those of the divisions Wrexham have previously competed in.

Injuries, suspensions, fixture congestion and changes in form can quickly expose weaknesses in squad depth.

Bringing in Archer would provide Parkinson with another proven Championship goalscorer who could either lead the line or operate alongside another forward.

His previous record at Middlesbrough and Preston suggests that he has the ability to produce goals when given regular opportunities.

For Archer himself, Wrexham could offer an attractive platform to rebuild his confidence and demonstrate that his Southampton struggles were more about circumstances than ability.

West Brom could have a battle on their hands

West Brom’s reported interest means Wrexham may not have a straightforward path to signing Archer.

The Baggies could offer the forward a strong Championship environment and have been monitoring him for a considerable period.

However, Wrexham’s current trajectory gives them reason to believe they can compete with established second-tier clubs for ambitious transfer targets.

The club’s rapid rise over recent seasons has been remarkable, and their spending this summer indicates that they have no intention of slowing down.

If Southampton decide that Archer is available and set a reasonable asking price, Wrexham could be ready to make their move.

Mubama deal could change everything

Southampton’s impending agreement for Mubama could ultimately prove decisive.

The Manchester City striker’s arrival would give the Saints another option in attack and potentially push Archer further down the pecking order.

For a player who already struggled for regular minutes last season, another reduction in his opportunities could make a transfer increasingly appealing.

Wrexham may therefore see the situation as an opportunity to secure a player who has already proven himself at Championship level.

With West Brom also interested, there could be a genuine battle for Archer’s signature.

For Parkinson, adding the Jamaican international to an attack that already includes several quality forwards would represent another statement of intent.

Wrexham’s minimum ambition is reportedly a top-eight finish, and signing a proven Championship goalscorer such as Archer would strengthen their chances of achieving that target.

If Mubama completes his move to Southampton, the door could be opened for Wrexham to make their move.

Whether they can beat West Brom to the forward remains to be seen, but Wrexham’s financial strength and growing reputation mean they should not be underestimated.
