Discover Mikaela Shiffrin’s tentative schedule for the 2026/27 alpine skiing season, including the Olympics.
Mikaela Shiffrin Sets Fresh Priorities Ahead Of 2026/27 Alpine Skiing Season
Six-time overall Alpine Skiing World Cup champion Mikaela Shiffrin is preparing for the 2026/27 season with a noticeably different focus compared to previous years. For perhaps the first time in her extraordinary career, the American superstar is no longer centering her ambitions primarily around slalom.
The 31-year-old enters the new campaign following another historic year in which she captured a third Olympic gold medal by winning the women’s slalom event at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina.
That triumph added yet another remarkable achievement to a career already filled with records and milestones. Shiffrin also matched the legendary Annemarie Moser-Pröll by securing a sixth overall Crystal Globe, equaling the all-time women’s record for overall World Cup titles.
Despite her unmatched dominance in slalom over the years, Shiffrin has now revealed that her motivation heading into the upcoming season lies elsewhere.
Rather than continuing to focus mainly on her signature discipline, the American skier has identified giant slalom and super-G as the areas where she believes she can still make major improvements.
Speaking in a postseason interview with Ski Racing, Shiffrin explained that she has become increasingly intrigued by the possibility of developing further in those disciplines.
“I have a lot of curiosity about how I can continue to improve in GS and super-G,” she said.
“It started to click at the end of the season.”
Her comments suggest the final portion of last season may have provided renewed confidence and inspiration regarding her potential in the speed and technical hybrid events.
For years, Shiffrin has been regarded as one of the greatest slalom skiers in history, collecting nine slalom Crystal Globes and dominating the discipline across multiple generations of competitors.
However, the American was unusually candid when discussing her outlook regarding slalom moving forward.
“I think I’ve reached my ceiling in how fast I can ski slalom,” she admitted.
The statement marked a significant moment coming from an athlete who has long been virtually untouchable in the event.
Rather than chasing further marginal gains in the discipline she has already mastered, Shiffrin now appears eager to challenge herself in new ways and continue evolving as a complete skier.
Provisional 2026/27 Calendar Offers Huge Opportunities
The provisional International Ski and Snowboard Federation women’s World Cup calendar for the 2026/27 season appears ideally suited to Shiffrin’s ambitions.
Although the schedule still requires final approval from the FIS Council, the proposed calendar features a packed campaign consisting of 40 races across 20 different venues.
The lineup includes 12 giant slalom races, 10 slaloms, nine super-G events and nine downhill competitions.
The increased emphasis on giant slalom and super-G opportunities could provide Shiffrin with the perfect platform to expand her success beyond the discipline that made her famous.
The North American section of the schedule is set to begin at Killington Resort on November 28 and 29.
Killington will once again host women’s giant slalom and slalom races, continuing its place as one of the key stops on the World Cup circuit and a major event for American skiing fans.
Beyond the early-season races, two major competitions are expected to shape the entire campaign.
The first is the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, which will take place in Crans-Montana from February 1 to February 14.
The World Championships are always among the most important events in alpine skiing, and Shiffrin is expected to target multiple disciplines as she continues pursuing further global success.
The second major highlight of the season will come at the World Cup Finals in Sun Valley from March 20 to March 25, 2027.
For the second consecutive year, Sun Valley will host the prestigious season-ending event, providing a high-profile conclusion to the campaign on American snow.
The venue is likely to generate huge excitement among United States skiing supporters, particularly if Shiffrin remains in contention for additional titles and records by that stage of the season.
Another Historic Milestone Within Reach
One of the biggest storylines surrounding Shiffrin entering the 2026/27 season is the possibility of her claiming a seventh overall World Cup title.
Should she achieve that feat, she would move ahead of Annemarie Moser-Pröll and become the outright holder of the women’s record for most overall Crystal Globes.
Considering the extraordinary consistency Shiffrin has displayed throughout her career, few would bet against her adding another historic achievement to her growing legacy.
Even after years of dominating the sport and rewriting the record books, the American star appears as motivated as ever to continue competing at the highest level.
Her recent comments suggest she still feels driven by both curiosity and ambition rather than satisfaction with what she has already accomplished.
“What I know is that I’m not ready to be done yet,” Shiffrin said.
That simple statement may be the clearest indication yet that the next phase of her legendary career is only just beginning.
With a renewed focus on giant slalom and super-G, another World Championships campaign approaching, and the possibility of a record-breaking seventh overall title within reach, Mikaela Shiffrin once again heads into a new season with the skiing world watching closely.
