The Hull City announcement has boosted Boro’s chances of reaching the play-off final.
Hull City have issued a fresh ticketing update regarding the Championship playoff final, and the announcement has only increased speculation that Middlesbrough could still potentially be handed a place at Wembley because of the ongoing “Spygate” controversy involving Southampton F.C..
The Tigers confirmed that they are still unable to provide supporters with full ticket details for the playoff final, including when tickets will officially go on sale.

The unusual delay has immediately attracted attention because, under normal circumstances, clubs reaching the Championship playoff final would already have begun the ticket sales process for such a major fixture.
Southampton are also currently not selling tickets for the Wembley showdown, adding further intrigue to the situation as the EFL investigation into alleged spying allegations continues behind the scenes.
Middlesbrough officials are still reportedly waiting to discover when the EFL’s Independent Disciplinary Commission will deliver its verdict regarding claims that Southampton secretly observed one of Boro’s training sessions before the first leg of the playoff semi-final at the Riverside Stadium.
The controversy has become one of the biggest stories in English football after Middlesbrough accused Southampton of breaching league rules by allegedly spying on their preparations shortly before the crucial match.
If Southampton are ultimately found guilty of violating EFL regulations, the independent panel has the authority to impose several different punishments.
Among the potential sanctions reportedly under consideration is expulsion from the playoffs entirely.
Should that extraordinary outcome occur, Middlesbrough could theoretically be awarded the semi-final victory and take Southampton’s place in the final against Hull City at Wembley on Saturday, May 23.
That possibility, while still uncertain, has led to growing speculation among supporters due to the ongoing delay surrounding ticket sales for the final.
Ticket Sales Delay Raises Questions
Ordinarily, tickets for the Championship playoff final would already be available for supporters to purchase.
It has now been more than two days since Hull City secured their place in the Wembley showpiece by defeating Millwall F.C. in their playoff semi-final.
Under normal circumstances, the club would typically move quickly to release full ticketing information so supporters could begin making travel and accommodation plans for one of the most important matches of the season.
Instead, uncertainty continues to surround the arrangements for the final.
Hull had initially released a statement on their official website suggesting that ticket information would be announced today.
However, that original update has since been replaced with a revised statement confirming there is still no confirmed timetable for ticket details to be released.
The change immediately sparked fresh speculation online, with many Middlesbrough supporters interpreting the delay as a possible indication that the EFL disciplinary process remains unresolved.
While there has been no official suggestion that the final itself is in doubt, the absence of ticket sales from both Hull City and Southampton has naturally fuelled further discussion surrounding the investigation.
Hull City Release New Statement
In their latest communication to supporters, Hull City thanked fans for their patience while they continue waiting for confirmation regarding final arrangements.
The club explained that important details, including kickoff time and ticket sale dates, have still not yet been finalised.
The statement read: “Thank you for your patience while we await confirmation of the kick-off time for our Sky Bet Championship Play-Off Final.”
Hull also acknowledged the large number of enquiries received from supporters eager for more information.
“We know many of you have contacted the Ticket Office in recent days, and we wanted to provide supporters with as much information as possible ahead of sales opening,” the club explained.
The Tigers added that full information would be communicated once final confirmation is received.
“Full details, including confirmed sale dates and kick-off time, will be communicated in due course,” the statement continued.
Until then, supporters were asked not to continue contacting the ticket office while arrangements remain unresolved.
“Until then, we kindly ask supporters to refrain from contacting the Ticket Office while final details are being confirmed. We appreciate your continued patience and support.”
Middlesbrough Continue Waiting For Verdict
Meanwhile, Middlesbrough remain in limbo as they await the outcome of the EFL investigation.
The club are reportedly continuing preparations while hoping the disciplinary commission could still take major action against Southampton if the allegations are proven.
Reports have suggested Middlesbrough are pushing strongly for sporting sanctions, including the possibility of Southampton being removed from the playoffs altogether.
The allegations centre around claims that a Southampton staff member was discovered observing and recording a Middlesbrough training session in the days leading up to the first leg of the playoff semi-final.
Southampton have confirmed they are cooperating with the investigation, while the EFL are understood to be attempting to resolve the matter before the Wembley final takes place.
With the playoff final now rapidly approaching, pressure is growing for a decision to be reached quickly.
For now, Hull City supporters, Southampton fans and Middlesbrough followers are all left waiting for clarity as one of the most controversial Championship stories in recent years continues to unfold.
Hull City prepared to pursue Wrexham player they failed to sign last summer, according to reports

Hull City are reportedly preparing to revive their pursuit of Lewis O’Brien ahead of the summer transfer window, with the midfielder once again emerging as a target for the Tigers.
The 27-year-old, who previously starred for Huddersfield Town and also spent time with Bradford City, was linked with a move to Hull during the previous transfer window. O’Brien, who has also represented Middlesbrough, eventually completed a permanent departure from Nottingham Forest, although a return to Yorkshire failed to materialise at the time.

Instead, Wrexham won the race for his signature, securing the experienced midfielder as part of their ambitious recruitment drive. Since arriving at the Racecourse Ground, O’Brien has established himself as a key figure in the squad, making 45 appearances while contributing four goals and seven assists across all competitions.
Hull Ready To Make Another Move
According to reporter Alan Nixon via his Patreon page, Hull are now ready to reignite their interest and could make another effort to bring O’Brien to the MKM Stadium this summer.
The Tigers are expected to have greater flexibility in the transfer market once their embargo is lifted, allowing them to target more experienced and proven players ahead of next season. O’Brien is believed to fit the profile of the type of player Hull want to add as they look to strengthen their midfield department.
Reports have also suggested that Hull’s desire to sign the midfielder is not dependent on promotion to the Premier League. Regardless of whether the club remain in the Championship or secure a top-flight return, the Tigers are thought to view O’Brien as someone capable of making an immediate impact.
O’Brien’s Rise Through The Ranks
O’Brien began his football journey in Huddersfield’s academy system and steadily progressed through the ranks before becoming an important member of the first team.
A productive loan spell with Bradford City during the 2017/18 campaign helped accelerate his development, with the energetic midfielder impressing through his work rate and consistent performances. Following his return to Huddersfield, he enjoyed a breakthrough period with the Terriers and quickly became one of the side’s most influential players.
The midfielder played a major role during Huddersfield’s impressive run to the Championship play-off final in 2022. His tireless displays in the centre of the pitch earned widespread praise as the Terriers pushed for promotion to the Premier League.
Nottingham Forest Move Failed To Deliver
Huddersfield’s dream of promotion ended in disappointment after defeat to Nottingham Forest at Wembley. Forest then compounded the Terriers’ misery by signing both O’Brien and his teammate Harry Toffolo shortly after the final.
Although there was significant excitement surrounding O’Brien’s move to the City Ground, his spell with Forest ultimately failed to develop as many had expected. The midfielder struggled to secure a regular role in the first team and spent much of his time away from the club on loan.
During that period, O’Brien had spells with D.C. United, Middlesbrough, Los Angeles FC and Swansea City as he searched for regular game time and consistency.
Eventually, he brought his Nottingham Forest stay to an end by sealing a permanent transfer to Wrexham last summer, where he has since rebuilt momentum in his career.
Would O’Brien Be A Good Signing For Hull?
There is little doubt that O’Brien’s Championship pedigree and experience could make him a valuable addition for Hull City. His energy, pressing ability and versatility in midfield would likely suit the demands of the Championship and potentially even the Premier League should Hull achieve promotion.
However, persuading Wrexham to part company with the midfielder may not be straightforward. Having only signed him less than a year ago, the Welsh club could be reluctant to lose a player who has already become an important part of their setup.

O’Brien’s leadership qualities and wealth of experience at Championship level make him a significant asset, meaning Hull may need to present a convincing offer if they hope to secure his services during the upcoming transfer window.
