Former Derby County striker Colin Kazim-Richards has been dismissed by Crawley Town after a miserable beginning to the League Two campaign left the club at the bottom of the standings.

The former Sheffield United attacker was removed from his position following Crawley’s latest defeat, with the club managing only one victory across their opening 10 league matches. The poor run eventually convinced the board that a change was necessary.

Crawley’s midweek loss against Shrewsbury proved to be the final blow for Kazim-Richards. His departure was confirmed shortly after the match, while assistant head coach Julian Gray and director of football Erdem Konyar have also left the club.

The League Two outfit have already moved to bring in temporary experience. Kevin Blackwell, who previously worked as an assistant to veteran manager Neil Warnock, has been appointed on an interim basis while Crawley begin their search for a permanent replacement.

Crawley confirm triple departure

Colin Kazim-Richards has been sacked by Crawley.

In an official statement, Crawley confirmed that Kazim-Richards and Gray had been relieved of their responsibilities with immediate effect. The club also announced that Konyar would be leaving his role.

Crawley paid tribute to the outgoing trio, particularly highlighting the contribution made by Kazim-Richards and Gray during a difficult period.

The club acknowledged that both had arrived when Crawley were facing a challenging situation and played a significant role in helping the team preserve its EFL status at the end of last season.

Konyar was also thanked for his work and commitment since returning to the club the previous year.

Crawley concluded their announcement by wishing all three individuals well for the future, while making clear that no further statement would be provided at that stage.

Kazim-Richards wanted more time

Kazim-Richards had insisted after the Shrewsbury defeat that he believed he was capable of turning Crawley’s season around, although he admitted that whether he would be given sufficient time was outside his control.

Asked if he could change the club’s fortunes, the former striker replied that he believed he could. However, he acknowledged that the decision over his future belonged to the club hierarchy.

Kazim-Richards also identified areas where Crawley needed improvement. He felt the squad required additional experience, particularly when it came to managing matches and dealing with difficult moments during games.

His comments came immediately before the club decided to end his tenure, meaning his opportunity to implement those changes would never arrive.

A respected playing career

Although his managerial spell at Crawley ended disappointingly, Kazim-Richards remains a well-known figure in English football because of his lengthy playing career.

He became particularly popular among Derby County supporters during his time at the Championship club, where his character and experience made him a respected member of the squad.

His professional journey began after developing through the youth systems at QPR and Arsenal, before he established himself as a professional footballer with Bury.

From there, Kazim-Richards played for Brighton before joining Sheffield United. His career subsequently took him outside England, where he experienced football in several countries and represented some major European clubs.

His overseas career included spells with Turkish giants Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray, while he also played for Toulouse, Olympiacos, Bursaspor and Feyenoord.

The forward later returned to English football with Blackburn Rovers, Celtic and Derby, adding further experience to an already extensive career.

International experience with Turkey

Kazim-Richards also represented Turkey internationally despite being born in England. He collected 37 senior caps for the national side and scored twice during his international career.

Before establishing himself at senior level, he also represented Turkey at under-21 and B-team level.

His club career eventually continued beyond Europe. He played in Brazil for Coritiba and Corinthians, while also featuring for Mexican clubs Lobos BUAP, Veracruz and Pachuca.

That remarkable journey gave Kazim-Richards experience of several different football cultures and competitions, something he was hoping to bring into management after moving into coaching.

Crawley now face an uncertain period

For Crawley, the immediate priority is stopping the slide at the bottom of League Two. One win from 10 matches has left them with serious work to do, and the board has decided that Kazim-Richards is no longer the man to lead that recovery.

Blackwell will now take temporary charge as Crawley assess their options and search for a permanent successor.

Kazim-Richards leaves having helped secure the club’s EFL status last season, but the poor opening to the current campaign ultimately proved too difficult for him to survive.

His next step remains unknown, but after a fascinating playing career and a brief managerial experience at Crawley, he will now have to consider carefully where his coaching journey goes from here.

The former striker will now be hoping that his reputation, international experience and knowledge of the English game can help him secure another opportunity in coaching despite this disappointing setback soon.
