KMI panel divided on whether Celtic’s penalty at Motherwell was a correct call amid title race tensions
The Key Match Incidents panel has ruled that Celtic should not have been awarded the dramatic late penalty against Motherwell that proved crucial in the Scottish Premiership title race.
The controversial decision came during Celtic’s dramatic 3-2 victory at Fir Park, a result that ultimately played a massive role in shaping the final-day title permutations.
Referee John Beaton initially allowed play to continue after Motherwell defender Sam Nicholson challenged Auston Trusty while attempting to clear a long throw into the box deep into stoppage time.
At the time, the score was tied at 2-2 and there appeared to be little concern from the on-field officials regarding the incident.

However, VAR official Andrew Dallas intervened and instructed Beaton to review the incident on the pitchside monitor.
After a remarkably brief review process, Beaton overturned his original decision and awarded Celtic a penalty for handball.
The call sparked immediate outrage among supporters, pundits and rival clubs, with many believing the intervention was unnecessary and incorrect.
Kelechi Iheanacho converted decisive penalty
Following the controversial award, Celtic striker Kelechi Iheanacho stepped up and converted the penalty kick.
His successful effort sent the away supporters into celebration and secured a dramatic victory for Martin O’Neill’s side.
The goal did more than simply seal three points.
It significantly altered the complexion of the title race heading into the final weekend of the season.
At the same time Celtic were battling Motherwell, Heart of Midlothian F.C. had defeated Falkirk F.C. 3-0 at Tynecastle.
Had Celtic only managed a draw at Fir Park, the title equation would have looked dramatically different.
A draw would have meant Celtic needed to beat Hearts by three clear goals on the final day in order to win the league on goals scored.
Instead, the victory over Motherwell meant any kind of win against Hearts would be enough to secure the Scottish Premiership title.
That advantage ultimately proved decisive.
Celtic crowned champions after dramatic final day
Celtic eventually defeated Hearts 3-1 in a dramatic title decider at Celtic Park.
Despite initially falling behind, Martin O’Neill’s side rallied to score three times and secure the championship.
The final stages of that match, however, descended into controversy and chaos after supporters invaded the pitch following Callum Osmand’s late third goal.
The aftermath of the pitch invasion continues to generate major discussion across Scottish football, but the earlier penalty controversy against Motherwell has now also returned to the spotlight following the KMI panel’s findings.

The decision to award the penalty against Motherwell had already triggered furious reactions throughout the football world immediately after the match.
Now, the official review panel has effectively confirmed the concerns raised by critics.
KMI panel says VAR should not have intervened
After reviewing the incident, the Key Match Incidents panel concluded that Beaton’s original decision to play on was the correct one.
The panel voted by a two-to-one majority that the on-field decision should have stood and that VAR should never have become involved.
According to the panel’s findings, the majority believed there was insufficient justification for Andrew Dallas to recommend an on-field review.
The report explained that two of the three panel members felt the intervention was incorrect and that the eventual penalty award was wrong.
The official report stated: “The majority (2:1) of the panel deemed the on-field decision of play on to be correct.”
It continued: “Two panel members felt VAR was incorrect to intervene and the penalty was incorrectly awarded for handball after OFR (on-field review).”
Only one member of the panel believed the penalty decision was justified.
The report added: “One panel member felt that VAR was correct to intervene and a penalty should have been awarded.”
Furious reaction followed controversial decision
The original penalty award sparked huge anger across Scottish football.
Many supporters, analysts and former players questioned how such a decision could be reached after the footage was reviewed.
One of the most notable reactions came from former Gary Lineker, who described the incident as the worst VAR decision he had ever seen.
The former Match of the Day host openly criticised both the intervention and the final ruling after viewing replays of the challenge.
Across Scotland, rival supporters and commentators debated the incident extensively in the days that followed.
The speed of the on-field review also became a talking point, with many observers surprised at how quickly Beaton changed his original decision after approaching the monitor.
Normally, controversial VAR reviews involve lengthy examination from multiple angles, but in this case the referee overturned his decision within moments.
That only intensified criticism surrounding the process.
Hearts frustration deepens after latest review
The KMI panel’s findings will provide little comfort to Hearts supporters, who already felt previous officiating decisions had harmed their title hopes.
Just one week earlier, another KMI review panel had determined Hearts should have received a penalty during their own clash with Motherwell at Fir Park.
That incident involved Tawanda Maswanhise fouling Alexandros Kyziridis inside the penalty area.
However, no penalty was awarded during the match itself.
That decision also had significant implications in the title race.
Many Hearts fans now feel a series of controversial officiating calls directly affected the destination of the Scottish Premiership trophy.
The latest KMI ruling regarding Celtic’s winning penalty against Motherwell is therefore likely to further fuel frustration among the Hearts support.
VAR debate continues to dominate Scottish football
The controversy surrounding the Motherwell incident has once again intensified debate over the use of VAR in Scottish football.
Since its introduction, the system has repeatedly faced criticism from clubs, supporters and pundits over inconsistency and controversial interventions.
This latest episode has become one of the season’s most high-profile examples.
Critics argue that VAR should only intervene when a clear and obvious error has occurred.
In this situation, however, the KMI panel concluded that Beaton’s original call to continue play was already correct, meaning the intervention itself was unnecessary.
The fact that the decision had such a major influence on the title race has only increased scrutiny.
Without the penalty, Celtic may have entered the final day needing a far more convincing victory to become champions.
Instead, the dramatic win at Fir Park shifted the pressure firmly onto Hearts.
Celtic controversy likely to remain major talking point
Although Celtic ultimately secured the league title by defeating Hearts at Celtic Park, discussion surrounding the Motherwell penalty is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
The KMI panel’s review has effectively confirmed what many critics believed immediately after the game — that the penalty should never have been awarded.
For Hearts supporters, the ruling will deepen lingering frustration about how the title race unfolded.
For Celtic, meanwhile, the decision forms another chapter in an already controversial end to the season following the pitch invasion chaos during the title-clinching victory over Hearts.
The incident also places further focus on Scottish football’s officiating standards and the ongoing challenges surrounding VAR implementation.
With emotions still running high after the dramatic conclusion to the Premiership campaign, debate over the Motherwell penalty decision appears set to continue well into the summer.
