Former Hearts defender Michael Steinwender has admitted he has no interest in dwelling on the disappointment of missing out on the Scottish Premiership title, choosing instead to focus entirely on the next chapter of his career following his move to German side Bochum.

The Austrian centre-back completed a surprise transfer to Germany only a short time after Hearts suffered a devastating final-day defeat against Celtic. That result proved decisive in the title race, allowing Celtic to secure the championship while Hearts were left to reflect on what might have been after spending much of the season challenging for top spot.

For Steinwender, however, constantly revisiting the painful conclusion to the campaign serves little purpose. Although he accepts that losing the title in such dramatic fashion was incredibly difficult, he believes footballers must quickly learn how to move forward if they want to continue performing at the highest level.

Reflecting on the experience, Steinwender acknowledged that coming so close to winning the league only to fall short on the final day naturally leaves a lasting sense of disappointment. Spending months in contention for first place created genuine belief within the squad, making the eventual outcome even harder to accept.

He explained that anyone in such a situation would be affected emotionally, stressing that frustration is an entirely normal reaction after missing out on a major achievement in heartbreaking circumstances.

Despite those emotions, Steinwender believes one of the most important lessons he has learned throughout his career is the ability to recover mentally from setbacks. Football presents constant highs and lows, and players who spend too much time dwelling on disappointments risk allowing those moments to affect future performances.

Instead of repeatedly looking back at what happened during the closing stages of last season, the defender prefers to concentrate on the opportunities that lie ahead. While he accepts that difficult experiences can provide valuable lessons, he insists there is little benefit in endlessly replaying painful memories.

According to Steinwender, the key is striking the right balance. He believes players should analyse mistakes and understand where improvements can be made, but once those lessons have been taken on board, their focus should shift completely toward the future rather than remaining trapped by previous disappointments.

That mindset has helped him embrace his move to Bochum with enthusiasm. Rather than arriving in Germany weighed down by the heartbreak of losing the title race, he has chosen to view the transfer as the beginning of an exciting new challenge.

Steinwender revealed that joining Bochum was exactly the opportunity he wanted once it was presented to him. After his agent informed him of the German club’s interest, he immediately decided it was the right destination for the next stage of his career.

The negotiations themselves progressed rapidly, allowing the transfer to be completed within a short period. While his representatives and both clubs handled the formal discussions, Steinwender’s own decision required very little thought because he was convinced almost immediately that Bochum was the correct move.

Another factor that appealed to the Austrian international was the opportunity to return to an environment where he could communicate in his native language every day. After spending time abroad, he admitted that speaking German again would make settling into his new surroundings considerably easier.

He joked that adapting to life in Scotland was not always straightforward because understanding the local accent could sometimes be challenging. Although language barriers never prevented him from enjoying his experience there, returning to familiar surroundings naturally offers an added level of comfort as he begins life in the Bundesliga.

Since arriving at Bochum, Steinwender says he has been impressed by the atmosphere within the squad. He described the dressing room as welcoming and believes the strong group dynamic will help him integrate quickly.

He also recognises that building relationships with teammates takes time, but regular training sessions will provide plenty of opportunities to become familiar with everyone on and off the pitch.

Beyond forming connections with his new teammates, Steinwender understands that adapting tactically is equally important. Every manager has different expectations, systems and methods, meaning he must learn exactly what his new coach wants from him before he can perform at his best.

He accepts that this adjustment will require patience, dedication and consistent hard work. Rather than expecting everything to come naturally from the beginning, he is committed to improving every day while adapting to Bochum’s style of play and tactical approach.

Looking back on his spell in Scottish football, Steinwender believes the experience helped him develop several important qualities that should benefit him throughout the rest of his career.

He explained that the Scottish game places enormous emphasis on physicality. Matches regularly involve direct football, with teams frequently using long passes that create numerous aerial contests between defenders and attackers.

In addition to dealing with constant aerial battles, defenders are also required to make repeated high-intensity recovery runs because many opposing forwards possess significant pace. Those demands forced Steinwender to improve both physically and mentally during his time with Hearts.

He believes those experiences have made him a more complete defender, equipping him with skills that can now be transferred to German football.

Rather than viewing his time in Scotland solely through the disappointment of the title race, Steinwender chooses to remember it as a period of significant personal and professional development. The lessons he learned from competing in such a demanding league have strengthened his overall game and prepared him for the next challenge.

Now fully focused on life at Bochum, the Austrian hopes to use everything he gained during his spell with Hearts as he begins a fresh chapter in Germany. While the memories of the dramatic title defeat may never disappear completely, Steinwender is determined not to let them define him. Instead, he is concentrating on embracing new opportunities, continuing his development and helping Bochum achieve success in the seasons ahead.
