Watford FC reacts to Hull City’s £10m transfer bid.

Watford are preparing for another busy transfer window as they begin a new era under recently appointed head coach Alessio Dionisi. Following a disappointing Championship campaign that ended with the Hornets finishing 16th, significant improvements are expected if the club is to challenge for a play-off place under the division’s expanded format next season.

Dionisi inherits a squad that showed flashes of promise but ultimately lacked the consistency required to compete near the top of the table. As a result, the club’s hierarchy is expected to oversee considerable changes in both arrivals and departures during the summer. However, Watford have swiftly rejected the approach.

The report indicates that the Championship club considers the offer to fall well below their internal valuation of the player. Club officials believe Irankunda’s market value is considerably higher, particularly when several additional contractual factors are taken into account.

One important element is the agreement reached with Bayern Munich when Irankunda joined Watford. The German giants are believed to hold a sell-on clause that would entitle them to a percentage of any future transfer fee. Bayern are also understood to possess a buy-back option, allowing them to re-sign the winger under specific conditions if they choose to do so in the future.

Those clauses mean Watford would not receive the entirety of any transfer income, making it even more important for the club to negotiate the highest possible fee before considering a sale.

For that reason, the Hornets appear determined not to lower their asking price despite Hull City’s interest.

The timing of Hull’s bid is also significant because Irankunda’s reputation continues to grow on the international stage.

Currently representing Australia at the FIFA World Cup, the young forward has impressed with his performances against elite opposition. His stock rose even further after producing an excellent goal during the Socceroos’ victory over Turkey, helping Australia progress from the group stage of the competition.

That display has further highlighted the exciting qualities he possesses and has inevitably increased attention from clubs monitoring his development.

Australia are now preparing for a knockout-stage clash against Egypt, giving Irankunda another major opportunity to showcase his ability on one of football’s biggest stages.

Every impressive performance has the potential to increase both his reputation and his transfer value. From Watford’s perspective, continued success at the World Cup would only strengthen their negotiating position if further bids arrive later in the transfer window.

Even if Australia’s tournament ends sooner rather than later, there remains a widespread belief that Watford should continue standing firm over their valuation.
