Steven Schumacher makes an exciting Middlesbrough comparison after Southampton draw.

Steven Schumacher believes Middlesbrough are the best Championship side he has faced since Enzo Maresca’s Leicester City team won the title in 2024, after Bolton Wanderers suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat.

Will Lankshear continued his impressive scoring form by netting twice at the Toughsheet Community Stadium. Aidan Morris and Amario Cozier-Duberry also scored, while Adilson Malanda’s header resulted in an own goal as Kim Hellberg’s side produced another emphatic victory.

For Bolton, the result ended an encouraging spell. The newly-promoted side had beaten Norwich City and Wolves, narrowly lost to Stoke City and then drew with Southampton. Schumacher accepted that Middlesbrough were simply superior.

Schumacher admits Boro were too good

Speaking after the match, Schumacher described the contest as difficult and said the difference between the two teams was obvious.

He remained satisfied with the points collected during a demanding run of fixtures, saying that four points from those four difficult games would have been welcomed beforehand.

However, Middlesbrough proved one challenge too many. Schumacher felt Bolton worked as hard as possible but were beaten by a team with greater pace, physical strength and quality.

He also praised Boro’s coaching, explaining that their players continually appeared in different areas, making them extremely difficult to contain.

Leicester comparison raises expectations

Schumacher’s assessment was shared by Bolton supporters and members of the press who watched the match. When asked if Middlesbrough were the best Championship team he had faced, the Bolton boss immediately referred to Maresca’s Leicester side.

Leicester were outstanding during their promotion campaign, and Schumacher believes Middlesbrough can reach a similar level when confidence begins flowing through the team.

He was also keen to praise his own players for continuing to compete. Bolton did not simply surrender after falling behind. Schumacher felt they remained a threat until around the 60th or 70th minute and created clear opportunities.

The problem was that Bolton lacked the quality needed to finish those chances, while Middlesbrough showed far greater efficiency at the other end.

Once the scoreline became more damaging, Bolton had to focus on limiting further punishment. Schumacher accepted that the final stages were difficult but insisted his players continued trying.

Boro strengthen promotion credentials

Middlesbrough’s victory moved them to the top of the Championship, increasing expectations that they can challenge for promotion.

The performance offered plenty of encouragement. Hellberg’s side combined attacking quality with movement and organisation, while their confidence appeared to grow as the match progressed.

The Leicester comparison is particularly eye-catching because Maresca’s team collected 97 points during their title-winning 2024 campaign. Middlesbrough will not want to get carried away, but reproducing this level consistently would make them serious contenders.

Southampton provide an interesting comparison

Southampton will be among the clubs monitoring Middlesbrough closely. Both teams are expected to compete for promotion, while their relationship remains strained after last season’s Spygate controversy.

Bolton had faced Southampton immediately before travelling to Middlesbrough, with Schumacher’s side earning a goalless draw against Tonda Eckert’s team.

That made the comparison particularly interesting. Asked what separated Southampton from Middlesbrough, Schumacher said Boro were more clinical and possessed greater attacking quality.

Bolton had managed to contain Southampton, but Middlesbrough presented a different problem because of the threat they carried in possession and around the final third.

Schumacher explained that once Bolton fell 3-1 behind, they had little choice but to commit more players forward and chase the game. That naturally created spaces for Middlesbrough to exploit.

The visitors took advantage through counter-attacks, scoring twice more to complete the 5-1 victory. Schumacher described the final two goals as top-drawer finishes.

A warning to Championship rivals

For Middlesbrough, the result was more than another three points. It demonstrated why they are expected to challenge near the top of the table.

Their ability to punish opponents, move players into dangerous areas and maintain pressure could make them a major threat throughout the campaign. Schumacher’s comments also underline the difference between a competitive Championship side and one capable of controlling matches against promotion rivals.

Their victories over Norwich and Wolves, narrow loss to Stoke and draw at Southampton show that they have already competed effectively against several strong opponents.

Yet Middlesbrough provided a different test, and Schumacher had little hesitation in admitting that they were better.

If Hellberg’s team can reproduce this performance regularly, the promotion race could become even more intriguing. Southampton, Middlesbrough and the other leading contenders will all know that consistency will ultimately determine who remains in contention.

Schumacher’s comments will therefore give Middlesbrough supporters plenty of encouragement, while also reminding every promotion rival that the standard required at the top of the Championship is extremely high this season.

Middlesbrough have moved top of the Championship, and their performance against Bolton suggested they have both the confidence and quality to remain there.
