Transfer interest grows as Portsmouth FC eye Ligue 1 striker ahead of new season
Although the current campaign has yet to conclude, Portsmouth FC are already being linked with attacking reinforcements as they prepare for the 2026–27 Championship season.
The club’s need to strengthen their forward line has reportedly led them to a prolific scorer in France, with interest building around Bamba Dieng, who is enjoying an outstanding season in Ligue 1.
With two matches still remaining in the ongoing campaign, Portsmouth are said to be monitoring the Lorient striker closely. Dieng has been in excellent form for FC Lorient, delivering what is widely considered his most productive season at the top level of French football.
Dieng’s impressive form attracting attention
The Senegal international, who has earned 21 caps for his country, has featured in 21 league games for Lorient this season. During that time, he has scored 14 goals, making him the club’s leading scorer and one of the standout performers for a side currently sitting ninth in the table.
His most recent contribution came in a notable 2-0 victory over his former club Olympique de Marseille last weekend, further highlighting his growing influence and reputation in Ligue 1.
Dieng’s performances have not gone unnoticed beyond France, with clubs across Europe beginning to track his progress. As his profile continues to rise, so too does his perceived value in the transfer market.
Recent estimates suggest he is valued at around €5.9 million (£5 million), a figure that reflects both his current output and potential. However, there is an added twist to his situation that could make him even more appealing to interested clubs.
Contract situation adds intrigue
Despite his strong performances and increasing market value, Dieng is approaching the end of his contract with Lorient. This means he could be available on a free transfer once the season concludes, making him an even more attractive option for clubs seeking value in the transfer market.
Such circumstances are likely to intensify competition for his signature, as teams look to secure a proven goalscorer without paying a transfer fee.
Portsmouth, however, are not alone in their pursuit. Reports indicate that several other clubs have been keeping a close watch on Dieng’s situation as the summer window approaches.
Championship and European clubs join the race
According to transfer insider Pete O’Rourke, multiple teams are monitoring the Senegalese forward. Among them are Championship sides such as Blackburn Rovers, Leicester City, and Oxford United.
Interest is not limited to England either, as German club FC St. Pauli are also reportedly tracking his progress.
This growing list of suitors suggests that Dieng could become one of the more sought-after free agents in the upcoming transfer window, particularly given his goal-scoring record and experience at international level.
Portsmouth’s attacking struggles underline need for reinforcements
Portsmouth’s interest in Dieng reflects a broader issue that has affected their campaign — a lack of consistent goal-scoring from central strikers.
Manager John Mousinho has relied heavily on Colby Bishop, who has made 42 appearances across all competitions this season. Despite his regular involvement, Bishop has managed just four goals, a return that has highlighted the team’s struggles in front of goal.
Additional attacking options have also failed to make a significant impact. Makenzie Kirk, who joined from St Johnstone FC last summer, has scored only once and has not been included in the matchday squad for the last six games.
Meanwhile, Thomas Waddingham has yet to find the net in five appearances, with his season disrupted by injury problems.
These issues have led to criticism from supporters, particularly regarding the club’s failure to strengthen the striker position during the January transfer window. Many believe that a lack of competition for Bishop has hindered the team’s attacking effectiveness.
Goals spread thin across the squad
Interestingly, Portsmouth’s top scorer this season is not a traditional striker. Adrian Segecic currently leads the scoring charts for the club with seven goals, underlining the lack of output from their central forwards.
This imbalance has further emphasized the need for a reliable goal scorer who can consistently convert chances and lead the line effectively.
Summer decision looms
As the season draws to a close, Portsmouth’s recruitment strategy is beginning to take shape, with attacking reinforcements clearly a priority.
Bamba Dieng’s combination of goal-scoring ability, top-flight experience, and potential availability on a free transfer makes him an appealing target. However, with multiple clubs circling, securing his signature will be far from straightforward.
Whether Portsmouth can win the race remains to be seen, but their interest highlights a clear intention to address one of the squad’s most pressing weaknesses ahead of the new campaign.
West Brom Facing Regret Over Key Sale as Value Soars
West Bromwich Albion could be left reflecting on a major transfer mistake after allowing Brandon Thomas-Asante to leave for a modest fee, only to see his value rise dramatically since his departure.
With just two matches remaining in the Championship season, West Brom appear to have done enough to secure their place in the division, regardless of any potential points deduction. Following their recent victory over Watford FC, the Baggies now sit comfortably above the relegation zone, holding an advantage of as many as eight points.
That cushion has provided some breathing room and allows the club to begin shifting its attention toward preparations for the next campaign. However, the summer ahead is likely to be one of reflection as well as planning, with several issues both on and off the pitch needing to be addressed.

Financial and Recruitment Issues Come Under Scrutiny
One of the most pressing concerns for West Brom heading into the offseason is their financial position. Avoiding further breaches of the Championship’s profit and sustainability regulations must be a top priority, especially after the challenges they have already faced this season.
The potential consequences of failing to comply with financial rules have been evident, and the club will be keen to ensure that they do not find themselves in a similar situation again. Strengthening their financial management will be essential if they are to move forward with stability.
Alongside financial concerns, recruitment has been another area that has caused significant problems. Over the past 12 months, decisions made in this department have not delivered the desired results. Managerial appointments, including the arrival of Ryan Mason and the experiment involving Eric Ramsay, failed to produce the impact the club had hoped for.
These missteps in recruitment have contributed to a dramatic decline in performance. A side that once looked capable of competing for a top-six finish has instead found itself battling near the bottom of the table. For a club of West Brom’s stature, such a drop-off is particularly concerning.
There is, however, a sense that a solution may have emerged in the form of James Morrison. The former player has steadied the team since stepping into a managerial role, and offering him the position on a permanent basis could provide much-needed continuity.
With the managerial situation potentially resolved, the club can then focus on improving their recruitment strategy during the upcoming transfer window. This will be crucial in rebuilding the squad and avoiding further setbacks.
Transfer Decisions Continue to Haunt the Club
West Brom’s struggles have been compounded by a series of questionable transfer decisions in recent years. Several signings have failed to make a meaningful impact, while certain departures have proven costly in hindsight.
Players such as Alfie Gilchrist have not lived up to expectations, while the sale of Tom Fellows has been seen as a significant loss. However, Fellows is not the only former player who has gone on to thrive elsewhere after leaving the club.
The case of Brandon Thomas-Asante stands out even more starkly. While his exit initially appeared to be a routine move that suited both player and club, it has since become clear that West Brom may have underestimated his potential.
Thomas-Asante’s Rise Highlights Costly Error
Thomas-Asante spent two seasons at West Brom before being sold in 2024. During his time at the club, he scored 21 goals in 78 appearances—a respectable return, but not one that suggested he would become a standout performer.
As a result, his departure for a fee of around £2.2 million did not attract significant attention at the time. It was viewed as a straightforward transaction, with both parties moving on without much scrutiny.
Two years later, however, that decision looks far less favorable from West Brom’s perspective. The striker’s value has increased significantly, with estimates now placing him at approximately £12 million—a rise of around 445 percent. In financial terms, this represents a missed opportunity for a club that could certainly benefit from additional resources.
From a sporting perspective, the loss is just as significant. Thomas-Asante has continued to develop and has become an important player for Coventry City. His performances have played a key role in their success, including their promotion to the Premier League.
His contributions have improved in terms of overall output, with more goal involvements and a stronger presence in attacking situations. During Coventry’s promotion campaign, he has been on course to finish with 12 goals and four assists in the Championship, highlighting his progress since leaving West Brom.
Praise Elsewhere Underscores West Brom’s Missed Opportunity
The forward’s development has not gone unnoticed. Coventry manager Frank Lampard has spoken highly of Thomas-Asante, praising his work ethic and physical attributes.
Lampard has emphasized the striker’s power, pace, and pressing ability, noting that these qualities make him a valuable asset to the team. His confidence in the player contrasts with the lack of faith shown by West Brom when they decided to sell him.
For Thomas-Asante, the move has worked out extremely well. He has not only avoided the instability currently affecting his former club but has also earned the opportunity to compete at the highest level following Coventry’s promotion.
For West Brom, however, the situation serves as a reminder of the importance of making the right decisions in the transfer market. The combination of losing a promising talent and missing out on significant financial gains underscores the need for a more effective recruitment strategy moving forward.
As the club prepares for the next season, addressing these issues will be essential if they are to avoid repeating the mistakes that have contributed to their recent struggles.
