‘Your mountain is waiting!’: Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn inspires USC Annenberg’s Class of 2026 students.
On May 15, 2026, the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism celebrated its commencement ceremony, recognizing more than 1,200 graduates from its communication, journalism and public relations programs. The event brought together thousands of proud family members, friends, faculty and staff at Alumni Park as students marked the end of one chapter and prepared to begin the next stage of their journeys.
The ceremony reflected both celebration and reflection, with speakers highlighting the achievements, growth and potential of the graduating class. Throughout the event, there was a strong focus on the importance of storytelling, leadership and resilience in an ever-changing media landscape.
Dean Willow Bay addressed the graduates by reflecting on how much they had evolved personally, academically and professionally during their time at the university. She praised the Class of 2026 for their shared commitment to purpose and meaningful impact, telling students that the answers they had been searching for throughout their studies had gradually revealed themselves through their own development and experiences.
Bay emphasized that the graduates represented a generation capable of shaping the future through ethical storytelling, creativity and service to others. She highlighted their willingness to listen with empathy and intention, qualities she described as essential in today’s rapidly evolving communications and journalism industries.
The dean also spoke about the responsibility the graduates now carry as communicators and storytellers entering a world filled with constant technological, political and social change. She encouraged them to use the skills they had developed at USC Annenberg to contribute positively to society while remaining adaptable and compassionate in their work.
The commencement ceremony also featured remarks from alumna Sophie Flay, a 2018 graduate of the school who now works as a correspondent and co-anchor for ABC News. Flay introduced keynote speaker Lindsey Vonn by celebrating the enormous potential held by the graduating class.
In her remarks, Flay encouraged students not to allow themselves to be limited by the expectations of others. She noted that throughout life and career journeys, there will always be people attempting to place individuals into categories or define what they should or should not become. According to Flay, embracing multiple passions and interests is what truly makes people limitless.
She connected that message directly to Vonn, explaining that the Olympic icon’s life and career represented the perfect example of refusing to be restricted by labels or limitations. Flay described Vonn as someone whose accomplishments across sports, writing, philanthropy and business reflected a mindset built on ambition, determination and courage.
When Vonn took the stage, she delivered a heartfelt and inspiring address centered on resilience, perseverance and embracing failure as part of the journey toward success. The Olympic gold medalist, bestselling author, philanthropist and investor used her own experiences to connect with the graduating class and encourage them to remain fearless when facing uncertainty.
Rather than focusing solely on victories or achievements, Vonn explained that some of the most important lessons in life come from setbacks and disappointments. She told the graduates that success is not simply about always winning, but about continuing to move forward after moments of failure or adversity.
Vonn emphasized that she was not standing before the students to explain how to win, but instead to talk about how to continue after falling down and why perseverance ultimately creates opportunities for success. Her words resonated strongly with the audience, particularly given her own career as one of the most accomplished alpine skiers in history.
Throughout her athletic career, Vonn overcame numerous injuries, surgeries and setbacks while continuing to compete at the highest level. Those experiences shaped the message she delivered to the graduating class, with the Olympian encouraging students to see challenges as opportunities for growth rather than reasons to quit.
She reminded graduates that difficult moments are unavoidable in life and career paths, but resilience and belief in oneself are what determine how individuals respond to those moments. According to Vonn, courage is not the absence of fear or uncertainty, but the willingness to continue despite them.
As her speech continued, Vonn encouraged students to remain bold in pursuing their dreams, even when outcomes appear uncertain or when others doubt them. She urged the Class of 2026 to take risks and trust themselves rather than allowing fear of failure to dictate their decisions.
Closing her speech with an emotional call to action, Vonn challenged graduates to dream fearlessly and continue striving toward ambitious goals regardless of obstacles along the way. She encouraged them to leap toward opportunities even when success is not guaranteed, reminding them that the greatest failure in life is failing to try at all.
Her final words left a lasting impression on the graduates gathered in Alumni Park. Vonn told the Class of 2026 to dare greatly, embrace uncertainty and continue climbing toward their goals because, as she passionately declared, “Your mountain is waiting.”
The commencement ceremony ultimately served as both a celebration of achievement and a reminder of the resilience required to navigate the future. Through speeches from Bay, Flay and Vonn, the graduating class received a powerful message about empathy, courage, determination and the limitless possibilities that lie ahead.
